  • K&L pilot fuel jets

Well, you were all right. Those K&L rebuild kit pilot jets were too big. I got new 42.5 pilots from Dennis Kirk and the it instantly idles better. Doesn't carbon up the plugs anymore. I just get a occasional spit back through the pilot air jets in the first 1/4 throttle. Don't know what's going on there. Could probably use new plugs after carboning up so many times. I never would have figured out any of this without all the carb info I've found on this website and the help from those who replied to my threads.

the spit back you refer to is a classic symptom of slightly lean running off idle, try a colourtune on your idle mixture. i wouldnt say its too serious tho, unless it happens all the time,is it mostly when engine is cold?

Gonna play some more with it today. Gotta go get some insurance and get her registered. Last night it was all warmed up (big fan blowing in front of engine)and was spitting back thru the pilot air jet occasionally as it came off idle just as you said. Wasn't all the time. Right now i just glad I didn't give up and sell it last year.

I keep hearing everyone talking about this "colortune". Is this something like a mercury gauge or something different. I have just put on pods and my plugs were already getting black after about 4 hours of riding time. I like to have everything just right so me and the SO are not stranded any where like we were with my 750 special. Which would be better, a Colortune or a merc gauge?

Colortune is a tool to check fuel mixture, ie rich or lean. A mercury guage is for sync. carbs. Check this link about Colortune.

I got a color tune this winter. Can't say bad things about it but good?
My carbs probly need rebuilt but the color tune won't change colors like it should no matter how i try to adjust the needles.
            still haven't given up

I think it is important to get the vacuum equalized at idle (synchronized with mercury stix) before you mess with the colortune. The vacuum synch adjustment adjusts the throttle plates (butterflies) relative to one another and exposes the pilot circuit pinholes in the ventouri tunnel more-or-less in that process. You can imagine how the synch process could affect the mixture. The pilot screw only adjusts one of four pinholes in the pilot circuit.

She be back on the road. Insurance through Progressive was only $75.00 for 12 months. Everyone else I called was twice as much. The plates here in Nevade tripled in cost since the last time I had in registered which I guess was back in '98. I road around for roughly 25 miles and I didn't notice any spitting after it was up to full operating temp. That colortune thing looks interesting. I assume that it's only used to set the idle mixture. And I assume if I get one of these things that I would need to get the "motorcycle colortune" version.

                  Colortune

Colortune helps you set the pilot mixture for revs up to 4000rpm.
This is where a lot of driving is done . Hence idle circuit is not just for your 1100rpm idle . I find it most necessary . Sync first to get it close. Colortune and sync again. So a sync tool is key . I like the Morgan Carbtune. I was using my friends colortune but wanted my own and ordered one from eBay .

                          Different number of colortune

It takes about 10 days to deliver . The colortune I received was for cars and not the motorcycle specific one . My friend says it will work so I'm off to play with it tomorrow .
