I'm having to run my pilot screws out about 4.5 turns from fully seated to get the best response and idle out of the ol' MAXIM. The carbs are "spotless" with new 47.5 pilot jets, no detectable airleaks on manifolds or carb butterflies...Is this typical of this model? I know the XS11's liked around 1.5 turns out give or take...

I had the screws backed out about the same amount with the old pilots so I suspected they might be partially plugged..The bike is box-stock with the original exhaust, airbox, air cleaner etc...

Just about all the other 82 and later Yami's I've worked on like 3 turns out. I know the 81 and older models were more like 1.5 -2

Hey ag9123,
I just too appart and cleaned the carbs on my newly acquired Maxim and had to turn them out 3 turns before it began running properly. It wouldn't idle with less than that. I spoke with a "Guru" from the XJ website and he's the one that told me that the least amount of turns to get close to having it idle well is 2 3/4. He also said it is not unusual to go to 3 1/2.
As I said, mine started settleing in at 2 3/4 and came into its own at 3.1980G Standard, Restored

Mine are backed out to more than three also, can't remember how many right now though. Did that to help with the popping on decel....it would idle about anywhere I put them if I remember right.Randy

guessing
Take out the guesswork X 4 with a Gunson's colortune . No idle setting is complete unless carbs are synched . I like the Morgan Carbtune . Its quick and easy and even I can do it .XJ1100K
