    OH YEAH

    And there is no way that I could forget to thank you all so much for the tech information to carry on. Without this site I would have given up on this bik about a month and a half ago as a lost cause. You guys are AWESOME!!!

      Thx for lettin' us know and I'm glad it worked out well for you ...

      On another note, over the last couple of years, on several occasions, I have paid a motorcycle shop to help me complete work on one of my bikes which I didn't have time or perhaps knowledge to do myself. Not even one single time has any of them helped much at all ..... but I still paid. Now, in all fairness, had those shops been staffed by one of the very capable guys on this site, it would have been a much different story. You have discovered the truth .... if you wanna' fix one of these beasts, the answers are right here.

        just another story

        My 80G came to me in pieces from the PO. He had had it in 3 different cycle shops with an intermittent headlight problem. The last shop had kept it 6 months, not found the problem, had the PO purchase several electronic component replacements either new or used. They left the bike in pieces, gave it back to the PO and told him to junk it. I bought the bike for $100, took it home, found the problem (diode) and had it all repaired in about 3 hours. I could tell from the look of the wiring harness that it had never been touched in that spot since the factory installed it. I think there are way too many cycle shops out there that have no techs with any electrical knowledge or ability to read a wiring diagram. I am glad that you got your bike going. You are going to enjoy your new toy. The XS/XJs are great bikes.

        BTW, are there any of you out there from NW PA and thinking about going on the Cancer Benefit Run starting at the Bradford, PA Zippo Lighter/Case Knife factory? This run is Saturday, July 19. Registration starting at 8am. I am planning on being there again. There are always hundreds of bikes.

          Hi Jaron,
          XS11 fuel economy is a relative thing and my sidecar rig gets the same 25mpg (in US Gallons) as my 3.8 litre V6 Buick but 10mpg is effin' ridiculous. A recent gas tank swapping adventure had my rig's mileage temporarily down to 17mpg but then I found out where Mr. Stupid had punctured one of the fuel lines to allow the precious fluid to leak out onto the road and we are back to 25mpg again. So first thing, look for fuel leaks. Leaks onto the street are annoying. Leaks through faulty carb float valves that can flood the carbs and let gas flow into the engine to dilute the oil can get expensive.

            I took my bike to a shop in NJ-They said that they could only replace the tires and nothing else.They will only work on bikes built in 1993 or later.Why i asked?The parts are hard to get,and they don't want to be liable if something breaks.I would rather have a shop tell me that than to keep it a while and tell me they couldn't find anything wrong.

              The gas milage did go up to over 20 MPG and I am slowly swapping out parts for better used ones or new ones where I can get them. I do need to get a rebuild kit for my petcock because it is just dripping all the time when it is off. I never want to pull the tank because it just leaks so much. On a side note. does anyone have a fuel take sensor hanging around?

                That's true to some extent ... the techs may have electrical troubleshooting and repair knowledge but it is usually product specific. I doubt that factories are currently putting on schools for 30yr old bikes ... and that's where the young guys that come into the business are trained ... no training equates to little or no knowledge. No knowledge translates to unproductive or wasted time and that's unprofitable when a shop ALREADY has it's bays full of late model stuff. Unfortunately, it's all about the money. It was only just recently and quite by accident, that I ran across a shop that probably could work on our bikes. Haven't tried 'em BUT there were lots of older Honda and Yamaha cruisers in there. Before that, I had never found ONE shop that knew how to work on an Eleven even though they said they could. Fortunately, since I'm retired now and thx to this forum, I don't really need one.

                However, if I were looking for a shop to work on my bike, I'd look for one with an 'old guy' workin' in there ....
