  • Tore down my clutch today

Got the clutch apart and as I suspected the springs have gotten a bit short. 28 years under compression no bloody wonder. There was no wire in mine so I suppose I am not the first in it. I am a little unclear as to what the wire in the tech tips is about. I didn't see it shown in my clymer. I am going to order springs but I don't think I will put an extra plate in it. That is a great trick if you don't put new springs in but I really cant see the point with new springs and plates that are in spec. The metal are all flat and look ok as well. I have the head that I got at my buddies shop. I want him to decide if it needs valves recut or just lapped. I will also set the valves before it goes back in. My carbs have been ok and I don't feel like tearing them down if I don't need to. I will likely get my buddy to set them up once it is running as I hate carbs and always have. Now just need to get gaskets and springs and hopefully reassemble. Oh yeah have to decide if I should replace the damn cam chain tensioner that started all this. It has been rethreaded to a larger bolt and I am not sure how good the threads are course how would ya know with a new used one?

    Hey Olebiker,

Did you see this photo in the tech tip??

Note the red arrow, there is a small wire that sticks out of the inside edge of the clutch BOSS assembly, and that's the one that you don't want to remove/cut!!!

Are you saying that yours is missing this wire, or that you weren't sure where it was?? Hopefully you still have it?

the wire that you see in TC's photo is ...

the tip of a big spring clip that holds parts the clutch boss together. If the clutch boss has been separated, you'll see an extra, kinda' different lookin' steel and a large skinny washer. Is that what you see?

Unfortunately the bike is an hour north of here. So I can't run out and look at it. What I saw what what shows in my clymers manual. It is an m411 the one with the colored wiring diagrams.

Is this part shown as the far right hand part under 22 on page 115? If so I need to look again but I sure didn't see it at a quick glance and I was kind of keeping my eye out for it.

In the Yamaha manual it is called the clutch boss ring. I am hoping that is what you are talking about. I maybe just didn't see it sticking out. I will check to make sure that it is there. What would happen if it is not?

                olebiker:

In your Clymers manual, on page 115, it shows an exploded drawing of the clutch components. The wire that TopCat is referencing is the last piece to the right of items 22 "Clutch Boss Assembly" In the Yamaha manual page 3-10 it shows the same exploded view and it is labeled Clutch Boss Ring.
