Hello fellows, what is the trick to get the air box bolts to go back in after removing the air filter? I have an 80 xs 1100 lg, and the bolts just hang down and wont connect to the threads to tighten the lower half to the upper half for a tight fit. Duct taped it but is there a fix that is available or a trick to get the bolts back in????? Let me know any and all info....thanks, Mike in San Diego

Sounds like you have loosened the wrong bolts, and the top of the airbox has come apart. The only four bolts you remove to drop the bottom of the airbox are the four wingnuts that come up from the bottom. If you have loose bolts anywhere, you probably need to remove the entire assembly from the bike to bolt it all back together.

You are correct ken, Assembly must come off bike to put it back together, andreas

        wingnuts

Hi Guys,,,you are right it is the four wingnuts but they do not screw back in, so I will take the entire box off and see what is going on. I thought there was a fix for the bolts, wingnuts, so they wouldnt fall out and not retighten,,,,,,,,,,Mike in S.Diego

          Don't do it.
Those are a PITA to get back in, or so I am told.
Perhaps your air filter is incorrect, or it is misaligned.

They can be a PITA to get back in but.. if they are apart already it will have to be done.

I have done them a few times and its not too bad. Its easier is you tape the bolt heads onto the airbox when setting the spacers below the middle brace. Then remove the tape of each bolt as you get them tightened.
