  • Fuse keeps blowing

I spilled some gas while fueling (dumb, I know - I was tired) and the following happened.

    1. Fuel gauge stopped working.
    2. Signal doesn't work.
    3. Blinker doesn't work.
    4. Rpm gauge doesn't work.
    5. No lights are present on the neutral\headlamp.
    5. Signal fuse (20a) keeps blowing.

    Am I in trouble?

I keep riding the thing anyway, but I need to fix it

    Hey there Olegred,

Okay, you've got an 80 Standard. The Standard has an overflow/rain drain pipe that empties below the tank. However, depending on where the overflow went, it could have gotten into the wiring harness!? The fuel gauge connecter is directly beneath the tank near the seat. The Reg/Rect is also there, and it controls the charging, which controls the Tachometer.

The OEM fuseblock with glass fuses is a weak link on these machines. The connectors for the charging/ALT are also BEHIND the main fuse panel. You'll want to also check the fuses themselves.

Sounds like you need to pull things off and check out your connectors, clean them, apply dielectric grease to seal them, etc.! See the recent Wire Harness thread by Myers for a link to what to use to clean the connectors with!

Gas is full of carbon as part of the hydrocarbons in it, but I don't know if there are many free electrons/elements in it making it a good conductor or not?
