Hey I've been having a bit of trouble with my carbs not wanting to run right also after rebuilding with the same kits. Take a good look at your old needles compared to the new ones.

My original needles were about 1/2 a clip position shorter and had a different taper then the new needles. Before you drive yourself nuts try putting the old needles back in and see if your mid-rpm problem clears up. I'm not saying the new ones can't be made to work but it might be a lot less hassle to stick with the original ones. I know switching back cleared up some of the problems I'd been chasing.

Hmm, I'll definitely take a look at those needles. Kind of depressing if they're the root of this evil.

Here's my plan based on your advice:

      1. Raise float height to 27mm
      2. Re-install old needles

Any other things y'all think I should check when I tear into the carbs again? Should I think about going back to the 140 mains? Or would this make the power loss even worse? Do I need different size air jets with the K&N filter?

I'd recommend doing those one at a time, not both at the same time. You don't want to change to many things at once. If you do both and the problem goes away you won't know if the float hight was wrong or if the needles were causing the problems. I know it means taking the carbs off again but in the long run it might save some trouble.

so what was the outcome? I'm chasing some jetting and carb issues myself.
I for some reason put my old jets back in and took out the washers that i adjusted my needles up with, I think I was tring to save gas, now can't find the other jets, and now am thinking about drilling them. oh it is a xj so has 112's and I believe I had 122's or something like that in. and I have 4 into 2 exhaust with no cross over (i think the exhaust came off a gold wind, 2nd handed) also I have individual filters. thanks in advance for any advice, and maybe where to find a thread on drilling jets.

Oh, I also made sure float heights were the same and increased the diameter of the fuel lines. She's a SCREAMER now.
