  • NEED engin help bad!!!!!!

Sorry i didnt know where to write this because the repair forum is not taking new threads.

Here is my problem. I have oil comming out of the air box looks like from the carb. I dont know a whole lot about engins but my first guess is bad rings. If you have any better ideas please tell me. So If thats whats wrong is there a manual that will help me repair the bike? Or any information on how to do this? Also where do I buy new rings? Please help I really miss my bike!

your crank case isn't over full is it? I had a similar problem on my 400 kaw years ago, if I remember correctly, I had inadvertently put too much oil in the crank case and it was getting into the air box through the crank case vent. check your oil level it could be too high. I'm sure someone with greater knowledge and experience than mine will chime in and give you something better to check (hopefully with a better memory as well). don't panic as yet....wait until the time is right, then panic . have a nice day and ride safe .

I was wondering that too, Lorax

Are you sure it's oil in the airbox? gas isn't unusual due to stuck floats... but oil is a horse of a different color...
have you changed the oil recently? if so, did you drain from just the filter housing? or did you also drain from the drainplug located behind it?

A factory manual is good to have, but a Clymers for your bike is invaluable...

thank you both for the fast response! I havent changed the oil yet for the year it looks like my oil is at the right lvl but I will check again just to be sure. That was a good call. I do know for sure its oil though. =[ I might take out half a quart and see how she runs!

oh by the way where can I get that manual? I'd love to have that! I have nothing for my bike. I guess I should also say its a 79 xs 1100 sp just incase that makes a differance.

If it is overfull you will want to smell it and be sure there is no gas in your oil. That can mess up your day in a hurry. I have had my crankcase fill up due to leaking petcock valves and carb problems. Good luck

Sounds like there may be a flooding issue, and the fuel is mixing with oil residue in the bottom of the airbox, and then spilling out. Does your oil smell like gas?

Get your bike up on the center stand and check the level in the sight glass before you drain some out, make sure it is actually over full. also, make sure it's oil coming out of the air box, gasoline does some weird stuff depending on what it comes in contact with. take a little time and be certain of what's coming out of the air box before you come up with an action plan, that way, you're chasing the right ghost. have a nice day and ride safe .

I just ordered a Clymer manual from for something around 22 bucks. I hear it repeated a lot on here that these are invaluable. Th home site is below

                      oil in fuel

                      Sargas3

When I first had my XJ had a similar problem clouds of smoke oil coming out of the exhaust joints and into the airbox.
I thought the worst but was simply the sump overfilled. If you do need new rings they are available from Bike Bandit.

Also, if you have the foam type air filter that need to be oiled, sometimes the foam oil can pool up at the bottom of the airbox over time and run out.

well it was the oil! I had about 4 quarts to much in there. Dont ask me how because I have no idea. So have some work I can get it started but I have black smoke. ANd it doesnt want to stay running. Im guessing this is a result of the to much oil. any Ideas on how to get it running good again?

                              excess oil removal

I had gotten a free Porsche 944 motor one time that the P.O. had squirted oil into (for storage) and wouldn't start...I took the plugs out, shined flash light and oil was thick....Took a Shop-Vac and attached a reducer and 1/4" CLEAR tubing and vacuumed out the excess oil......cleaned plugs and she fired right up.....hope this helps...chop
