  • Head removal

I have a stripped spark plug hole and used a heli-coil kit but am not happy with the repair.I did it with the head still attached. How difficult is the task of removing the head to repair the spark plug hole? After you remove the valve cover what should be the next step to get at the hole.I don't want to do a half-ass repair again. The last time i used the kit the inserts are seated with a long supplied punch after you thread the insert in.I have the time to do this repair starting Friday.

I stripped a plug hole on a VW bug once and had to fix it.I didn't use a helicoil and I would worry about it leaking.I did use a
threaded insert though and it worked great. The little kit I bought had a big tap in it and like four inserts.I think I paid $20 years ago. I dont know if you could still do that after you already tapped it for the helicoil though. The hole might be too big,but maybe not.I dont have the charts here(I do at work though) or I would check for you.
Anyway just a thought.Good luck with it.

Or do what I did - snapped a plug off, then snapped off the easy out in the remains of the plug.
Took the head off - no biggy if you have some basic tools and a bit of mechanical nonce. Went to a local machine shop where the old geezer in there did a great job of sorting it. Then reseated all the valves and gave the whole head a good cleaning and in the meantime I cleaned the piston heads and put a new cam chain in.
Everything back togeher all cleaned and freshly oiled - now I've got a sweet top end.
