That's exactly what my speedometer did before it died a horrible, screaming death on the way back from Las Vegas.

It could just be that the speedometer and cable need a little lube, or the speedometer cable drive gears have dried up and need grease.

Check it now before it gets expensive.

On my bike the noise was actually coming from the speedometer cable drive gears in the left side of the front wheel hub, NOT the speedometer or the cable. The noise traveled up the cable and made it sound like the speedometer/cable was making the noise.

There is special washer with tabs installed in the left side of the front wheel hub that engages the wheel hub and the lower speedometer cable drive gear. The grease in the speedometer drive gears had dried up. When the worm gear seized up, the tabs broke off the washer in the hub, destroying the front wheel bearing and seal.

I repaired the gearset and the front hub but I am sitting on my ASCII and reading the Internet instead of riding while I wait for a new set of front wheel bearings and seals.

If I had checked where the noise was coming from in the first place instead of assuming that it was coming from the speedometer/cable I would have saved the front wheel bearings and, possibly, the front hub seals.

    Regards,

      tach

As for the tach, make sure the connections coming from the alt. are clean and not melted. The tach gets it's signal from the alt. and there is a connector (white wires) behind the fuse panel. Remove the fuse panel mounting bracket (3 phillips screws) to access it. After cleaning if no improvement, you will have to dig deeper, probably into the tach itself.

My thoughts are that the humming noise you hear is actually the speedo cable rounding itself off inside the drive at the front wheel which seems to be where they all break. But that is not where your problem is. It is in the speedo itself and probably an easy fix.

Take the unit off the bike and turn upside down. Where the cable goes into the back of the unit there is a bushing that the cable turns and that will dry out and drag. Put a few drops of light machine oil here and let it soak in and that may solve your problem.

There is no gearing inside the speedo except for the odometer.

          Good luck with it.

ok i greased up the wheel bearings and speedo and noise went away but i am still having a prob with the tach. i looked behind the fuse block on the right side of the bike and found no wite wires. i cleaned the fuse block and wires i did see, then i pulled the cover off the alt and clened that but still having this prob. the wierd thing is after i ride for a cuple of miles of a steady speed it mellows out and doesnt do it for a wile. this grimlin is getting to me i like the bike to be perfect call me wierd but i love this bike and there is nothing like a inline 4.

              alt wires

Follow the wires coming from the alternator. They run up behind or around the fuse box somewhere. That plug is the one that gets corroded and can cause the tach to wobble. Also make sure the connectors at the voltage regulator (including grounds) are clean.
