  • speedo gear and tire pressure

I read somewhere that to grease the speedo gear, you take it apart. I have it off the hub, but I don't see how to "take it apart". On the hub side, you can see where there is grease in the cavity around the center shaft. I cleaned out all the old grease. Some Questions...

    - is this where I add the lithium based grease? If so, how much??????
    - can the unit be taken apart????????
    - how do I grease the speedo cable????????

Regarding my new Elite 3 tires, they read 40psi max on the side, but I'm wondering what others, with this tire, would put in each??????

    Thanks,

    Hi Kjoslin,

If you have the old grease cleaned out, you should be able to see the teeth which drive it all. Just make sure there is some grease on 'em!..... Lithium is good, but anything is better than nothing.

Don't pack it full; it will just come back out.

If you want to strip it, there is a big snap-ring holding it all together.

If it ain't broke, modify it!

I use the Mobil1 Synthetic grease for all the "general" grease points on daily ride. As a single rider with a fairing, I am running 34 to 36 PSI on the front EliteIII, and 36 to 40 PSI on the rear EliteII.
The cable should ONLY be greased/lubed with the stuff you can buy at the auto parts store. They have a tube of it for about $4.00. Don't forget the instrument itself!! I use a drop of silicon lube in the bottom of the speedo, now that I froze up my first one!

        Ray,

I took apart the speedo gear, cleaned it, added more grease (lithium based...before I read your email); hope I didn't add TOO MUCH; then put it all back together.

When I quickly spin the front wheel, shouldn't I see the needle rise on the gauge???????????

Well it doesn't. It worked great before I messed with it.

Also, how do you grease (and where) the "INSTRUMENT ITSELF"??????

        thanks,

        Keith
