  • My XJ burning oil?

So my bro-in-law tells me the other day that he had to put two full quarts of oil in the engine. Now, when I was home, the oil light flickered some, but I never noticed it smelling of burnt oil and it never had any oil spot under it, so I'm a little curious how it could have been so low.

Is there something I can tell my bro to check out? Anywhere in particular he should look on the bike?

That's a lot of oil to be missing.
Would think if using that much oil could either see some smoke or smell it burning.

If no leaks....and compression good, check valve stem seals.

Did he check the oil through the window on the SIDE or CENTER stand? ALWAYS check oil on the center stand, with the bike as level as possible! If he checked on the side stand, have him recheck NOW!!!!

        Oh no... oh hell no...

I don't actually HAVE a center stand, so it would have had to have been on the side stand! What did he (I) do?!

Manual, yes. He didn't remember that I had one, but knows now. Tractor, no...

OH, and my bro just talked to me. He said he did make sure the bike was straight up and down before he checked it for oil.

              What did he (I) do?!

You let someone who may not know bikes have control of your machine.

This seems like a ludicris thing to do... overfill the oil like that, but I have seen it plenty of times with new owners.

                FSCGunslinger:

As was stated, "That's a lot of oil." If your bike is not level, it will give an erroneous reading and two quarts is 2/3s of the oil supply. If you did not see oil smoke before, you will see it now as overfill condition will throw oil into the air box through the breather tube as well as all over. Tell him to put the bike on jack stands and make sure the sight gage is at the full mark. if over, then siphon some out of the filler tube. A turkey/chicken/kitchen baster will do it.

He is very mechanically savvy (at least enough to know to check the oil with the bike straight up... can't say I would have known that, sadly... ), and I trust he won't hurt my baby.

Have him hold the bike level and check it. I am guessing it is 2 full quarts OVER full now.

If he can figure out a way to hold the bike level, or slightly leaned to the right side, you can get a cheap turkey baster with some fuel line or something similar attached to the tip. Stick the line into the filler hole and suck out what isn't needed.

OR.... try to pull the plug and estimate 2 quarts.... Or... change the oil! lol. I wouldn't worry about changing the filter again though.

If you have the stock airbox still, too much oil will cause it to get blown out the crankcase vent into your airbox where it will run out all over and make a mess of your filter. If you have pods, it will blow it out this tube all over the back of your motor and right in front of your back tire!? Not a good situation for cornering. My first ride on mine before I bought it... the stripped drain plug came out and all the oil dumped in front of the back tire. Just like being on ice!

So... nothing traumatic/harmfull done to the engine. Just get the proper level in.

He's gonna double check the oil level again before he rides it some more, but he told me he did hold the bike level when he checked the first time and when he filled it. He said it was really low.

If it burned 2 quarts in the few hundred miles you rode it, it should look like a mosquito fogging machine behind you.

I know! The guy I bought it from said that he changed the oil and filter, but that was last summer...
