  • ballast resister help please

Ok so after broswing the forums and doing a dozen searches I've narrowed it down to the ballast resister, because it will only run with the starter engaged. My question is where is it and how would I go about hooking this up? Any help would be greatly apriciated. Also I know most technical terms for things as I placed 2nd in the state of maine for powersports. If not my dad will most likely know.

P.S. needs carb work as it only runs choked but sounds animal with no mufflers. Carb kits all over ebay for 80 bucks in change.

The resistor is bolted to the left side frame rail, under the tank, and above the valve cover. It is a silver metallic device and i will have two red/white wires protruding from it.

Ok thanks. My next question is where do these wires hook up? Would the red go too a live 12v wire?

There will be a red/white coming out of the ignition module mounted on the rear fender. It goes to the resistor, and then the power goes to both ignition coils. The red/white wire on the starter solenoid is where the 12v to the coils comes from during cranking. In run mode the power comes from the module.

Lets say it needed to be rewired and the main fuse was gone is there a way I can run temp wires just to hear it idle on it's own without the starter engaged before I rewire it?

            Hey Bamper,

Here's a photo from the Dyna Coil upgrade tip:

The Ballast resistor is just above the head, that long flat silver metal thing hanging from the frame.

You can jump the plug that plugs into it so that you are running direct 12 volts to your coils bypassing the BR, but you only want to do this for a few minutes or so. Running the bike for very long this way could damage the coils as well as the TCI!

So those coils would fix that problem? How much they run on ebay? Thanks.

                  Hey again Bamper,

I just used that photo from that tech tip because I remembered it showing the BR. IF you remove the BR, you'll want to put in some aftermarket coils that have ~3.0 ohms, and the MikesXS coils DO, and are fairly cheap compared to the Dyna's or the Accels, and are fairly high output as well.

So....has bypassing the BR allowed it to start and run without holding the starter button engaged?? This was more for a diagnostic technique. IF you OEM coils are still good, and your BR is bad, then you can get a replacement BR which would be much cheaper than a pair of ignition coils!

Don't remember what bike the 18" wheel was from, should be in the recent threadQd

i know the coils are good, strong spark on all plugs. It because the fuses are gone and it needs to be rewired.
