  • Oil in the air cleaner

    Hi,
Can someone please help me. I'm wanting to know the causes of oil coming out through the air cleaner. I think my rings are gone but just want clarification in case its something else.

    Thanks,
    Dale.

I have low compression on one of my cylinders and usually get some oil in on the air cleaner, not enough to cause a significant amount of oil in the air clener. But I was sick of it and routed my crankcase vent to an aux. filter and do not worry about it.

How much oil are we talking about?

      Oil in the air cleaner

I would say about a litre poured out of it. I had it idleing for about 5 mins and it was fine. Then I took it for a strap around the block and after about 300 meters, oil started pouring out. Can you tell me how you re-routed it to an aux filter? Do you think the crankcase vent is all cloged out with crap?

      Thanks,
      Dale.

What you are describing sounds a lot like what happened to me when I first picked up Tsunami.

The PO never actually rode it and didn't know anything about it. He had opened up the oil filler cap to check the oil, much like he would have done with a Briggs and Stratton. He thought it looked low, so filled it up "to the bottom of the filler neck".

Of course, that turned out to be WAY too much oil. With the motor running, the excess oil was pumped up the crankcase breather which connects to the airbox. It built up enough there to leak out of the breather on the bottom of the box, pooled up on the hot engine, then ran off onto the even hotter exhaust system. I was sure I had just bought a real big problem.

I stopped a few miles down the road at my brother-in-law's place. We did a bit of calling around to find out how to check the oil level through the sight glass low down on the right side of the motor. We drained out a couple of litres and all was fine.

Any chance you've got the same problem?

          Oil in the air cleaner

          Hi Ken,
Yes it does sound exactly like that. I looked in the sight glass but it all scratched, I looked in the oil filler hole and I didn't see any oil in there. So I poured in 3 litres off really good oil. I probably over filled it (D'OH).

So what your saying now is that I should change the oil and make sure it is completely empty, then put in 3 litres of oil again?
Sounds like a plan Stan, I'll give it a go and see how it goes.

          Thanks,
          Dale.
