    Hey Bamper,

Through discussion with Yamaha I found out the following.

All bikes were made in Japan with the first bike being number 101.

Each bike made was numbered consectutively after that. Mine is Canadian country code 3H4 and numered 076 so it was number 75 off the line. My other bike is 1072 so it was 971 off the line.

This do not mean that Canada got 900 bikes. They would make so many in a production run for one country and then change up for another country and then come back later and make some more the first country.

I was told that, in all, about 200 specials were made for Canada in 1979. I would imagine you guys south of the border, being a somewhat larger market, would have had significantly more bikes made.

I don't know how many were made for the US but maybe if we polled all the members for country codes and numbers we could figure it out.

Who ever has number 101 has the first ever Special made in the world!!!!!!!!

Do a search, as this was tried here.
Don't think it helped very much figuring out how many XSes there are and the Yamaha Corp won't say.

My 79 XS11 is also a 3H4 numbered 272. I think it would be interesting to know the actual production numbers. Does anyone have any ideas how we could find out. With cars they seem to be able to come up with the numbers for just about every make and model. I know someone, somewhere has these numbers we just need to ferret them out. Of course it may well be that we really do not need to know as just riding them is knowledge enough.

I tried searching and found nuttin. I emailed yamaha and got some of the info as they told me that 200 we made in 79 for Canada. They couldn't be more specific as they say their computer records don't date back that far. The number they was an estimate but I don't know what is was based on.

Probably the best resource to find out numbers would be this site and the others around the world devoted to our bike.

I did find one site that had people registering their numbers and bikes but can't remember the link.
