  • help running gas line

Hi, I have a 1979 xs1100 special that has been sitting for a few years, I almost have everthing on it fixed (I think) but i need help running the gas line. it has been to long since I had it off I don't know how to put it all back. I basicly need a drawing for the way it hooks up to the petcocks and the carberator and the airbox. i have a manual that shows a diagram of how it goes to the petcocks and the vacuum valve but it doesnt show how it hooks up to the carbs or the airbox can someone please help.

    thanks

Are you using the octopus valve? If you are do a search for octopus valve and you should find a diagram showing the proper hose hook ups.

The lower line coming out from the carbs should hook to the gas tank on the front output from the petcock and also to the octopus via a T. There should also be a fuel line running from the octopus to the rear output on the petcock. The upper line from the carbs needs to hook to the nipples on the top of the air box. Now repeat for the other pair of carbs on the other side of the tank. A vacuum line should go from the boot on carb #2 to the Octopus if your using it, another vacuum line should run from the advance unit in the left side cover to the nipple on the engine side of the #2 carb body.

If your not using the octopus then run the line from the bottom of the carbs to the Rear output of the petcocks. Use whatever you have to block off the front output from the petcocks. Also put a cap over the vacuum port on the #2 carb boot.

Thanks for the quick responce. I guess I am using the octopus. there is a valve bolted on top of the carbs that the gas lines are routed to. i remember it had atleast 2 3way adapters in the gas line. like i said i was using a diagram from my manual it just didnt show where to hook to the carb. it looks like the carb has 4 places for a line to hook to. 2 upper and 2 lower if i understand you corectly you are saying the upper goes to the air box and the lower 2 hooks into the junction for the opctopus and petcock

Yeah the lower lines are for the gas supply to the carbs, the upper two are vents that hook to the airbox.

The only thing I can't remember is which ports the lines should hook to on the octopus. I think the "outside" ports are the ones that go directly to rear port on the petcocks. And the inside ports are the ones that get hooked to the line with the T to the carbs and front port on the petcocks. You could check by hooking a line to it and blowing, if you octopus is good you shouldn't be able to blow through the line that goes from the octopus directly to the gas tank.

well I put gas in it and it leaked bad looks like i have to rebuild the petcocks and possibly the carbs (gas was running out of number 4) they were cleaned and assembled about 3 years ago and havent had any gas in them scince but i guess they dried out. do you think the octopus needs to be rebuilt too?

I was going to order my parts from partsnmore but when i order the carb kit do i need to order 4 of them? or is one kit for 4 carbs?

              thanks

That should be the correct kit. You may also want to look up georgefix on ebay, as he has most of the parts that DO fit our bikes.

Hi again. is there anyway someone could label the gas lines in the diagram in this post then put the lengths of each line? I have spent about 3 hours trying to get the lines to either not be kinked or to be long enough to reach. I don't even want to think of how much line I have wasted. I think I can figure out how to rout them around everything if I at least have the lengths.

                      thanks

if not can someone take some pictures of how there gas line is ran. I.E how it is routed around the carbs and intakes. from that I should be able to get the lengths right

                        thanks

I, and many others have just gotten rid of that damn thing, and ran the lines directly to the carbs.

Hi, thx but I have the drawing. I just don't know how it loops around the carbs and stuff. I don't have the original lines so I got some gas line but I am not sure about the lengths or if say the t's go on top of or under the carbs. I keep getting kinks in my lines and I have already cut and recut about 8' of line and I don't want to keep trying to guess how it is done.

ok I still don't know if the petcocks are working right
when I started testing it didn't make since at all but I relized when I put them back together I have the cover for the right on the left and so on. anyway now i have the covers on the right sides here is what I did

I unhooked all the lines and then tested to see when gas came out and on what side of the petcock. I used a picture and added text so you can see just what it is doing.

from what I can tell gas comes out the vacuum side more then the gas side. is this working right?
