Just wondering if anyone has had to replace the seal between the top and bottom of their stock airbox? If so did you find an OEM replacement or make one up?

Rather than start another thread I want to add a couple more questions.
Fuel has been leaking on and off into airbox. Carbs are clean and all floats adjusted to 25.7mm. I checked the floats in hot water and they all float well and show no leaks.
I looked at the needle valves and noticed, under a magnifying glass, a small line around each of their tips. Could this cause leaking? Can fuel also leak past the fibre washer? (I know some have issues on the 80/81 models with the o-ring seal, 79s have the fibre washer.)
I also found that my right petcock is not holding 100% shut so it still feeds slightly when off.
I want to measure the actual fuel height in the carb but don't have the nipple on the 79. Has anyone made an adapter to replace the bowl drain plug with a nipple to do this measurement?
Lastly, can I run the 80 float needles and floats in the '79?Ernie

they also have petcock kits.
I've got both BS34 II and III's and have no problems using the stock type floats/needles in either. Think tod has managed to put "newer" style floats/needles in the older carbs.

Vitron needles
If you have the vitron tipped float needles-my 79 and 80 both do-and you have a whitish ring around them, I have been told that would indicate they are worn.
They are cheap enough, so may as well replace them.
Z1 enterprises has the petcock kits, float gauge(neat tool, kind of expensive and I'm not sure how necessary it is.) and some other items. Before you buy the petcock kits, there is a post here somewhere about how to 'tweak' the petcocks to stop the weeping. Do a search for it and try that first. I would. I hate spending money needlessly.
As far as I have seen the float needles are the same-as long as they have the little black vitron tips. In my parts research I haven't seen any different years or part numbers for them-they're just 'vitron float needles'.

As far as making nipples, I have the same drain plug on my 80G carbs. I went to the local auto store and got metric M8 X 1 grease fittings and with a drill press, drilled out the center of the fitting, (there is a ball and spring inside) and fasten a foot of clear vinyl tube on the nipple end of the grease fitting with a spring clip. Ty-wraps can also be used but the come loose sometimes. I threaded these in place of the carb drain plug. This gave me the sight gage I needed for the fuel height trick detailed in Ken Talbot's write up.

boyat68.....great minds think alike, that's exactly what I did, I picked up a package of 8mm by 1 grease fittings and drilled out the balls, yesterday.
CarolynS.....the stock 79's are not tipped, I think the "tipped 80's will fit. The local dealer wants $40+ for a needle/seat combo per carb...I ordered 4 completed rebuild kits including gasket, needle'seat, main jet, pilot jet screw, mixture screw...for 14.95 each total $60

Can't find the seal anywhere, called a bunch of dealers, part number does not even come up anymore so they say its not available and no one has any old stock.
Guess I'll have to make one up, I'm thinking of using some small vaccuum hose. Has anyone else run into this?Ernie

My air box seal is pretty good, but if I was going to construct one I probably would use the pipe insulation that plumbers use to insulate hot water pipes. A small sleeve can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot for pennies. Clip a longitudinal piece that matches the air box seal and glue it into place.

Sounds good but my only concern is its ability to withstand any gas fume and/or spilled gas. The reason my is gone is due to the numerous times it has been exposed to the fuel leaking from the carbs.
Maybe I'll try spilling gas on it first and seeing how it reacts.Ernie

Made a seal out of vaccuum line. I slit it with a knife along its enitre length and then slipped on the tab on the upper portion of the airbox. Looks good and I think it will work!Ernie

Ordered on Wed arrived on Fri.
Not sure if I'm 100% happy though. Installed the new valves and seats and I still having issues with fuel leaking past the seats.
I don't know if it is the new valves or not.Ernie
