    Carb questions: Getting a '79 Standard running

    Hey guys few qeustions regarding my 79 Standard's carburetors.

    I just put new coils/plug wires/plugs in the bike. Got it to fire up, but it was running cold on cylinder #3. Gas also began to pour out of the airbox when the bike was running. I suspected a carb problem, so I pulled it, and sure enough, carb #3 is leaking fuel like crazy.

    So now I'm going to be thoroughly going through them.

    I'm also going to buy the pod filters from that site, since I'm ditching the stock airbox. Will there be any differences in throttle response with the pod filters? How will pod filters change the motor (if at all)?

    I checked out the jetting recommendation thread, and the bike has a 4 into 2 Mac exhaust, and with the pod filters, I calculated that I'll need a 145.0 Main jet, and a 45 Pilot jet. Do these sizes sound correct to anyone?

    Where can I buy these main and pilot jets for my carbs? I haven't had any luck finding them anywhere yet

    And I'm ordering some Plasti Dip off Amazon to re-coat my cracking carb boots. I'll also be replacing all the fuel lines and inline filters with new lines and filters.

    Try doing a google search for "Mikuni Jets" should turn up tons of places that sell them. We use the "large round" type mains and "BS30/96" type idle jets. You should be able to get them through your local shop also, just tell them what size and type.

      After you get the carbs cleaned really well and complete pull the air box and clean all the vent passages as well. If they are blocked the carbs will not vent properly and they will again overflow into the air box, or worse into the cylinders.

        Considering every machine has a personality of its own, I can tell you how I am set up and I usually have no problems whatsoever (knock on wood) and it is a thrill ride from crack of idle to redline.

        4-1 MAC exhaust with pod filters.
        Main jets 142.5...pilot jets 42.5...needles, middle setting.....floats 27mm.

        You can get jets from Dennis Kirk and they are real Mikuni jets.

          Thanks for the help, I've decided to try the 142.5 and 42.5 jets. I found both the main jets and pilot jets for cheap on DennisKirk.com Hopefully I won't have to replace anything else in the carb.

          PartsNMore was out of stock on the pod filters, anyone know any other sites that have them for cheap? I don't want to spend $80+ for a set of 4 filters, there has to be some cheaper somewhere

            Sweet I just scored 4 54mm pod filters for the bike off eBay for $45

            Now all I have to do is clean the carbs and wait for the parts to get here to get the bike up and running again. Then I need to get the carb sticks and tune them.

            It's going to suck watching everyone else ride while waiting for parts!

              To bad you got the ones on ebay, I think the ones on Mikesxs are the best looking with a cool XS stamped in them. Anyways make sure the ones from e-bay don't block the vent hole on the front of the carb. You might have to cut a little notch or something if they do.

                I'll be able to tell if they block the vent hole by just test fitting them?

                  Never mind, I just noticed you have a 79 like me. I don't thing this problem effects us because on our carbs the vents are hoses that attach to the air box. On later models the vent is a hole on the front of the carb. Either way you should be able to tell if the air filter blocks anything just by taking a close look at how big the lip inside the filter is. I suppose if you wanted to be really sure you could smear something on the lip and then press the filter to the carb, then when you remove the filter you could see where the lip touches the carb.

                    Yeah, I believe that there are vents on the carb boots themselves on the stock boots, so I should be all set then? I'll check them again when I go to PlastiDip the boots.

                      Some of the pod filters have a lip on the INSIDE of the filter. That WILL cause problems with the carbs, as it blocks the air jet in the carb intake bell. Do a search, and you will find some threads on this. Once you get the filters, look inside the mount, and see if there is a 1/8" to 1/4" lip. If so, CUT IT OUT BEFORE mounting the filters.

                        I've never rebuilt a carb before, but it was pretty damn easy, and only took a few hours. Blasted the hell out of it with carb cleaner too. I found out I had a stuck float which was causing my problems, and it was pretty gunked up. Also rejetted both the main and pilot jets 3 stages (142.5, 42.5) for the Mac 4-2 exhaust and the pod filters.








                        My carb boots were also cracking pretty badly, but none of the cracks went entirely through. I decided to coat them with Plasti Dip before I put them back on so I wouldn't have to worry about them leaking. This stuff works pretty good, and was only $7, compared to $100+ for a new set of boots. I forgot to take after pics

                          I decided to get the filters from Mike's anyway, they were pretty sweet looking

                          Got the carbs mounted back on my bike and got a little more work done



                          Started running fuel lines/filters/vac lines too





                          Next up, make a 2 liter bottle rig and put a hook from the ceiling to hold the manometer.


                          Also, just picked up a new project bike, think I'm going to have the frame powder coated and the motor cleaned up/stripped.

                            I bet the kawi moves 6 cylinder. Honda has one to it has airbags and a cd player on it.
