  • correct accell or dyna coils

Can anyone tell me which is the correct part numbers for Accell or Dyna coils to fit my 1979 xs1100 special.
I also would like to know where may be the best place to order them from?
Which plug wires would be recommended with either of these coils to provide the best combination?
Which if either of these brands would serve me best and offer the best fitment to stock?
Any things I need to know or have to change in order to install these coils would be a great help as well. My searching has left me a bit confused so I humbly ask wiser men than I for assistance.

Here's a link (LINK ) to my upgrade to Dyna coils.
    They are still working fine.
I got them from Dennis Kirk. I used the Dyna plug wires and MSD plug boots.
As far as if they're the correct coils for your bike (ohm/resistance-wise) I don't know. My 78 has a ballast resistor (still installed) so they are the 1.5 ohm. They are listed as 6 volt but I was told they would be fine.

Yes, they are more expensive than MikesXS coils but I feel it was money well spent.
    YMMV

I bought the same coils after reading Pat's excellent write-up.

Then I realized later that I have a late bike which doesn't have a ballast resister fitted so the coils are not correct for my application

Just check if you have one or not before blowing $100

Hi . Would this be the part you refer to as the ballast resistor ...2H7-85370-01-00 RESISTOR ASSEMBLY...If so then i do in fact have one. If I go to a coil with 3 ohms do I have to disable it and if so how do I go about that. I was looking at this particular set http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/cm...&np=&brandId=5

          Forget ballast ?

OK. If you can do away with the ballast resistor when using MikesXS coils , couldnt you do the same with the green (3.0 ohm ) Dyna Coils . Just wondering

The red coils that Pat used are 1.5 Ohms, these are the correct fitment for earlier bikes that used a ballast resister.

Later bikes (and XJ) used a different TCI and don't have a ballast resister, these need the green coils that are 3 Ohms.

If the ballast resister is bypassed (taken out and the wires joined together) then the 3 Ohm coils work fine on the earlier bikes.

It is my understanding that the TCI wont last too long if the red coils (1.5 Ohms) are used on the later bikes without a ballast resister. I really wish though that someone could confirm if that is true or not because as stated earlier I bought the red ones by mistake...!

              Shappers:

Electrically speaking, from the schematic of the firing circuit found on page 6-9 of the Yamaha Service Manual, I would hazard a guess that the Ballast Resistor is there to protect the coils as well as the TCI. Meaning that when the bike is running, the Ballast Resistor drops the voltage, hence the amperage down to about 8-9 volts. This allows thinner wire on the primary side of the coil (designed). The after market coils 3 ohms, means thicker wire, able to sustain a heavier voltage. The "gotcha" is the design of the TCI, which nobody knows except the manufacturer and Yamaha; will the transistors used in the switching circuit handle a heavier voltage load.

There have been testimonials on this site that members have used the 3 ohm coils and removed the Ballast Resistor with no apparent effect, and have been driving the bike for years that way.

Looking further at the firing circuit, there is a 12 volt load on the base of the transistor, so I suspect that the collector and the emitter of the transistor would work perfectly well with 12 volts. I do not believe that an engineer would design a device with that critical difference. I suspect that only the coils are at peril.

Thanks for the great reply. I've pretty much decided to run the 1.5 Ohm coils anyway even though I haven't got a ballast resistor.

I guess I will find out how well the TCI will take that kind of load

If it all goes pop I have a 36-1 toothed wheel that I was planning to fit one day, if the TCI fails, it will just hasten along that mod!

                  Dyna coils

So...which coils are correct for the XS1100SG? Is it the red 1.5 ohm coils or the green 3 ohm coils assuming everything is currently stock?

                      IIRC

Near as I can tell , a Special comes with the newer 3 ohm coils and therefore would require the green DC1 type Dyna Coils .
As I have not actually performed this change-over myself , your findings may vary .
I beleive your coils are part no. 4H7-82310-60-00 which are used on 80 Specails ,81 XS1100 and 82 XJ1100 as well as others.
Since the OEM coils are weak in comparison to todays coils, we have to consider aftermarket . Dynas are $120 roughly not including Dyna wires and different boots(90degree) and wire ends.(Mouting mod required)
MikesXS has compatible coils for much cheaper only requires a slight mounting mod . New wires ,etc of course are suggested .
If you use resistor plugs ,you may not need the resistor caps .

Well for better or worse I have decided to go with the accell coil kit. This link pretty much did it.
