  • wires and coils

I am new to this and to the xs11, although having xs750s and also a xs650s.
I would like to replace my wires and coils while preparing for a good long riding season with the accel version that my local Yamaha dealer can sell me for $200.00
Does anyone out there know a cheaper place to get these.

Dennis Kirk is about $150 if I remember correctly.

Here's a quote from the XS11 Ignition Coils FAQ:

    Accel coils:

You can get replacement coils from Accel, but they do not have the proper
primary resistance per the manual, (for 78-80 XS applications only). Also
the part number given in the Coil FAQ is wrong according to ACCEL. I have
not verified the correct part number yet but one person who bought a kit
said it was Accel #140403. The correct kit is listed in Dennis Kirk and is
#20-309, and comes with brackets, hardware and plug wires and runs about
$148 USD. Every person who contacted me said that installation took some
time and work to make the brackets fit OK. Several people contacted me about Accel coils on their bikes and all of them were using the the coils for "non CDI ignitions", these coils have a primary resistance of 3 ohms. This is also the primary resistance of the 81 and 82 bikes with the 4RO type ignition box. So they should work on those bikes as well.

I've installed these coils and the only other thing I used besides whats in the box is one hose clamp to secure the bottom of one of the coils to my frame in a vertical orientation (the top I mounted the stock position). I *might* have used a longer mounting bolt also.

You should also read the FAQ in full and make sure you need to replace your coils

I seem to remember awhile back that an XSive said Kawasaki 12V coils adapt well on the XS11. Don't know which Kaw model though.

I put a set of Dyna coils on my 79 XS11 Special about 10 years ago and they are still going strong. The Dyna coils are made specifically for the bike and used the stock mounting holes and were the correct resistance. Good luck.

I called the guys over at Dynatec in California. They have two separete coils they say fits the bike. Can anyone remember what the proper resistance for a new coil should be? I don't want to trash a perfectly good running bike trying to make sure it don't shut down on me out on the road.

                      Dang,
I must have looked over that one sentence a hundred times missing the 1.5ohm written right there in grey and black. I got it now, thanks.

One of the coils on my 78 appears to have gone bad.
If I'm reading everything right, my 78 has 1.5 ohm coils. Accel offers 3 ohm and .7 ohm coil sets. I'm reading that lower resistance (3 ohm in my case) will cause problems. Higher resistance (.7 ohm compared to my 1.5 ohm stock coils) will work, they claim, with out damaging my system.
Can anyone whose been through/ researched this let me know if I'm understanding this correctly?
I'll also be calling Dennis Kirk Tech line for info. Looks like their price is $156 US. Mirriam Cycles has a kit with custom brackets all set-up for our bikes ($250 US, too steep for me).
I see the post in the tech tips about this. If I do it I'll take pics that someone could maybe add to the post.
This is my 1st parts malfunction on this bike since I got it running. I was still able to ride it home on cyl 2-3, about 5 miles.

                          Pat,

The lower resistance 0.7 ohms will probably damage your black box. In the coil FAQ, I address this issue. I have not tried these coils myself, but when I did the research for the addendum to the FAQ, I talked to several people who did. A lower resistance will cause more current which means HOT and burned out electronics.

Here is an actual quote from the FAQ:

                          Accel coils:

You can get replacement coils from Accel, but they do not have the proper primary resistance per the manual, (for 78-80 XS applications only). OK, now I see my error . Three ohms is higher resistance than 1.5 (duh ) so the .7 isn't enough resistance for my bike. Looks like I has it bass-ackwards .
Before I do anything else I'm going to check my battery (per FAQ). Pick-up coil looks to be in good shape still.
I've been wanting to upgrade the coils anyway and SWMBO already gave her blessing so I might get them even if I find it's something else (sshhhhh..... don't tell her )
