    Carbuerators

A few years ago I rebuilt the carbs on my 79 XS1100 Special using K&L rebuild kits. I mainly bought the kits for the pilot screws because the tip on a couple of the original ones broke off. Also the original pilot jets were a struggle to get out and the heads were too damaged to reuse them. I just noticed after years of trying to get this thing to idle right that the K&L pilot jets have a couple extra atomizer holes in them than the originals. The spark plugs are as black and sooty as they can be and I wondering if these jets are the reason. Also I,ve been wondering if the original main jet (135) should have been changed out when I put on the individual K&N filters. The air pilot jets (180) are the originals, I think.

I would think the air filters would make it run leaner not richer. The pilot jets could definitely be your problem. You can get a set of four Mikuni pilots or mains for $9.99 from Dennis Kirk.

    Good Luck!

I think the K&L kits have bad (too big ) pilots, if I remember right.

The pilots in the K & L kits for the 79 special have 8 holes, which make it run rich.
I couldn't get my bike to run right with them. The correct pilots have six holes.
