    In my experience as a machinist I have found that aluminum forms it's own invisible oxide layer immediately after cutting or polishing it. Only preservative needed is wax to help water roll off. I have had polished bare aluminum pieces on other bikes for years and all they needed was an occasional wash and wax.

    Check it out.

    I polished all the aluminum on my XJ and all I did was wax them. It's only been a few weeks since I did it but so far no spots or fading at all. Clearcoat will eventually deteriorate.

      Ever since the Nyalac stuff I used back in 1995+/- wore off, polishing and waxing is all I have been doing. Works great as long as you take time to keep your machine clean. Also, every time I remove a cover I run it over with the buffing wheel to brighten it up again and then wax it.

      Another thing I have found is that when you finish riding, take a rag and just wipe off your aluminum while it is still warm from the ride.

        When I painted the bodywork on my bike I used the Duplicolor engine enamel, gloss black and clear.

        The clear became milky looking on several pieces after I sprayed it on....but as it cured it became clear again. Turned out very nice with a good gloss.

        I would suggest that anyone who tries this paint, Don't panic! it'll be ok, just let it cure. Mine was clear by the next morning on some pieces...took a little longer on others.
