  • Plug color

Ok, how long should I expect to run new plugs before they show enough color to read them.

I have about 200 miles on a set of new NGK plugs and the bike is running great. The side electrode and center electrode on all 4 cylinders are black, and the insulator is still a nice white (only difference between the new ones and stock is the "R" in the plug number, meaning it's a resistor plug and I don't think that matters).

I'm getting between 36-38 mpg in mixed riding between back roads and interstate riding at 75-80 mph.

The bike takes just a bit of throttle opening even when choked, to fire over in the morning, but once it fires up it idles great and I can ride away with no delay.

The plug color tells me it's lean, but the headers are perfect chrome and no bluing, as well the bike displays no lean tendencies at all.

Anyway, should I give it another couple hundred miles?

    Plugs

Sounds like your plug color is pretty good, and if it's running fine, leave it alone. 200 miles is more than plenty. Just my opinion.

Wasn't planning on doing anything to it for sure, as we know "the enemy of good is better".

I haven't seen plugs that white on the insulator in my life after a couple hundred miles.

Gotta love a good 28 year old bike, runs cleaner than when it was new...

Heck, this bike was made when I was 12. I didn't know a Yamaha from Hee-Haw.
