  • Cool Screw, No not that kind!

O.K., I haven't posted much lately so I don't know if someone has found this or not! When disassembling the deck of carbs, some of the factory screws were installed by Godzilla just before he went on a date with Mothra. So, I went to the local chapter of ACE Hardware and found they stock stainless steel cap bolts. In metric sizes. Some have knurling around the head and some don't. With the SS polishing up, the air chamber covers on the top of the carbs looks really cool. On carbs 1 & 4 I put the chrome domes off the 80SG and the smooth sided allen cap screws. The inner domes have the knurled screws, also very shinney.

I got some of the stainless smooth allen head screws as a kit on ebay. They look great and are much easier to deal with than those lousy phillips heads screws. Very satisfied with them. Check 'em out here.

        Cool Srews

OOOHHH, SHINY. I found the same thing at my local ACE. Also found some chrome plated screws. The button heads really look cool. As far as phillips head screws go, the guy who invented them should be put over a slow fire and have his chest hairs extracted with a pair of visegrips at one minute intervals.

          Me too!

I took out every single Phillips head fastener on my carbs and replaced them with Allen screws from Bolt Supply House.
          Best $5 I ever spent.
          And Tim,
not the chest hairs, somewhat lower down. Crush, twist, yank. Repeat.
OTOH, do it to Henry Ford as well. He's the guy who wouldn't make a deal to put Robertson screws in the Model T and thus popularised Phillips heads instead.

I buy alot of fasteners in my business so one day I went to Fastenal and purhcased a couple of sizes of SS allen cap screws and changed about everything out. They last alot longer and never corrode or rust. Also, you never realize how many fasteners you have showing on one of these machines. You can go through a bag of 100 in a flash but in the long run they are less expensive than changing out plated screws every few years.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

There's also a guy that sells a kit of POLISHED stainless allen bolts/screws. They are kind of high at @ $40 inc shipping, but that was cheaper than me buying them individually from my hardware store... and they looked VERY good! They really bring out the wow on the sidecovers, but look best against the black of the valve cover.

There's a lot of pieces in the kit... enough for all the sidecovers, but on hindsight, I would have put the regular ones back in the oil pan that no one sees, and keep the extras to touch up other things like the plastic cap that the engine vent tube attaches to.

I also bought that stainless allen set for the carbs. After getting the others in, I was a bit disappointed. Even though they are stainless, they are pretty dull and dingy compared to the other set I got. It takes some work to get them shiny like the others.

                  Screws

I don't know Fred, The idea of intentionally looking at that part of a guy....... to each his own I guess. MSC is another place to get fasteners, they are pretty reasonable. W.W. Granger might be another.

                    pictures, my downfall

Mr. Talbot, Sir, I maybe a while on the pics as I am much better with a wrench or torch or a lathe than a computer. But I will try as I do have a digital camera. I have seen your pics and a lot of the other guys here and I am not sure I can do as good. Back in the 80's I lived in LA. Bought a rather expensive Olimpia 35 mm camera with all the goodies. Went on trip to San Francisco with wife and the pictures turned out quite badly. The next year we went to the wine country with our best bud and his wife. I gave him the camera and told him to do the photos on the trip. His turned out fabulous. Frameable. Gave him the camera, goodies with my blessing. Most people take pictures and I take guick snapshots.

Stick around a while, and we'll turn you into a photographer, an IT guy, and anything else you want to do.
