I went to my storage unit after work today to work on the bike.I took electrical cleaner and took apart some connectors and now have the oil pressure light, turn signals, horn and neutral light working.Tach also works.I sprayed electrical cleaner but the headlight doesn't work neither do the lights in the gauges. Also i started the bike and the pipes from front brake side are- not hot, hot, not hot, hot.I took off the carbs and am going to clean them.

You're correct i didn't ask a question -I don't understand the pipe logic. Can someone please help?I don't know which pipe is closest to the front brake lever.Whichever that pipe is called #1 or #4 it is not hot.the next pipe is hot the next one is not and the one closest to the clutch lever is hot. What would cause this?1980 XS1100 SG

The cylinders are number left to right, or clutch lever to brake lever. It sounds like you are saying that #2 & 3 are not firing. They share the same ignition coil, so you have an issue with that circuit. You may have broken pick up coil wires. That will cause the symptom have describe. To find onfo on repairing the PUC wires, just use the search function at the top of the page, and type in pick up coil wire repair. Everything you need to know will be there.
Ooops!
I just re-read the question, and now it sounds like a fuel problem. #3 & 4 share the same fuel source.Last edited by John; 05-21-2008, 05:17 PM.

John thank you for clarifying that up.I took off the carbs but would a fuel problem cause the exhaust pipes not to get hot?So basically it is running on 2 cylinders correct?I value all answers and thank you in advance for the help.1980 XS1100 SG

If the cylinder isn't firing, then the pipe will not get hot. Spritz some water on then to ensure they are hot or not. Have the carbs been thoroughly cleaned, or just been sprayed on until they looked clean from the outside? It sounds like #4 isn't getting fuel, or the spark plug is fouled.

I reread the post. He is refering to 2 and 4. He's just listing them backwards. If all his commas are correct, he's referring to 2 and 4.

Since 2 and 4 don't share a coil that would seem to point to carburetion rather than ignition.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

#2 and #4 are not hot at all.I sprayed water on them and nothing.I sprayed water on #1 and #3 and they steamed. So is this a carb issue. The carbs are sitting in the back of my Jeep ready for Memorial Day cleaning!1980 XS1100 SG

You know the headlight doesn't work unless the bike is running, right? Was it running and not working?Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

My bike had a strange wire running from the fusebox (headlight fuse) to the park light wire that went to the rear signal lights. I found when I removed it I had no park lights, headlight, or dash lights.
Saturday I did the fuse box replace mod, and all of a sudden the lights all work without that extra wire!
The old box had a fuse in it, but I guess it wasn't actually letting the cricuit work.
The headlight fuse is one that likes to melt out of the stock fuse block, so it may be worth checking. Mine you could see the solder had melted in the top cap and ran down the outside of the glass fuse.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
