    I finally reached the point where I am sick and tired of screwing with the wiring inside the left side engine cover... here's how I got to this point:
    Start bike, tug on all the wires, bike stays running, replace PO's wire repair job since wires have since gone brittle, put everything back together, start bike again, everything seems okay, ride bike for two days, still has midrange stumble, seems to be getting worse, bike starts running on two cylinders intermittantly, pull left cover again and wiggle wires a bit, runs on all 4 again, re-repair wiring, ride for two days, repeat above symptoms, pull cover off again, notice stress cracks in cover near 2 bolt holes, wiggle unrepaired wires, runs on all 4 again, decide that it's time to replace all of them all the way back to the connector.
    I pulled the entire assembly from the bike, very carefully marked the connector before removing terminal ends from it to ensure they go back in the right spot, slid the black sheath off of the wires to expose the entire run and discovered 4 crimp connections in clear heatshrink approximately 1 foot away from the advance/PUC assembly. Is this a factory thing? I STILL can't find any obvious breaks in the wiring, so I am hoping that whatever internal breakdown that is taking place will be resolved by replacing all 4 wires from the PUC all the way back to the connector. Any experience with this?

    Yes, the crimps are there from the factory. They are there to join the flexible pickup wires to the standard harness "non-flexible" wires.

    Are you using flexible wire when you do your PUC fixes? Some have used voltmeter test lead wire with good results.

      That's exactly what I'm using. I'm also replacing the heat sleeve that was in pretty bad shape to help protect it fron the exhaust as it's routed back to its connection point behind the fuse block. Thanks for cluing me in to the factory setup...makes sense to me now.

        I tried to do the wire repair on mine. Just kept breaking somewhere else. Ended up buying a new set. I did have one one the "crimps" come lose on the new set. Left me dead in the water. Repaired and no more problems. I did try to leave a little bit extra slack so the wires are not under so much stress.
