Is there any way to tell if the idiot oil light is telling lies. I know I have plenty oil in the crankcase, but the 'I'm gonna die' light is on. At first I thought it was a bad taillight or brake light, but I know now it isn't.

oil light
I assume you have a Special. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a bad connection at the light checker unit under the seat (left side). When I'd wiggle the wires going into the unit, the oil light would go on and off. I just twisted the wires until the light remained off, fastened it back down, and it's been fine ever since (2+ yrs.). HTH2H7 (79) owned since '89

Had same problem. P.O. wired taillight direct to fuse panel, bypassing the light checker. Because of the bypass the light checker thought light was out and turned on oil light. Took a little to figure out as all connections were good, just wired in the wrong place.Ernie

Oil Light Gremlins
I believe you hit the Gremlin on the head Ernie. My PO did the same thing. He put a standard model taillight on a Special. Now I know what to look for. Guess that's the risk you take with a bike in a basket!1979XS1100SF
