  • Sticky speedometer and clutch question.

Just got the bike and noticed the speedometer is a bit flaky, sometimes it works fine other times it sticks around 10 to 20 mph. What do I need to do, lube the speedometer or lube the "actuator" at the wheel? Or does one or the other need to be replaced? I already took off the cable and sprayed it, didn't help any.

Also, when do you know when you should change the clutch? Mine seems like you have to pull the handle all the way back to get it to work. I tried to adjust the cable, didn't help any. Is it hard to change out the clutch?

If you look through the "Tech Tips from the MAIN page, you will find most of the answers.
The speedo should be pulled, turned upside down, and have one drop of LIGHT OIL, such as 3in1, put into the brass bushing. That should help. If you want to be sure, clean with brakeclean or some other cleaner that leaves no residue, and then use 2 drops of oil on the bushing. DO NOT USE WD40 ON ANY PART of the speedo assembly.
The clutch can probably be fixed by doing a PROPER adjustment, starting under the cover. The procedure is listed on numerous threads, as well as the "Tech Tips".

      Thanks for the welcome!
I guess the guy I bought it from had everything loose, I already tightened the front and rear brakes up to where I like them. Said he liked it that way! I guess some people would rather go than stop!
What do you consider light oil?

I adjusted the clutch and tried the 3 in 1 on the speedometer. The clutch is better, it may need a new clutch. The speedometer work just a tiny bit better, do I need to let it soak over night? What are the 2 wires on the top of the gauge? One of them is holding on by a thread, can I re-solder it? If I put in too much oil will it come out inside the gauge or are the internals sealed?

              speedo & clutch

If you need to, disassemble the speedo and oil it. It does come apart. I'm not sure what wire you are talking about, but if it is broken, by all means repair it. Make sure your clutch is properly adjusted down under the clutch cover (2 phillips screws). Do a search for clutch adjustment for detailed instructions (easy). Fill in your profile telling us what model and year your bike is. Much easier to help you that way.
