Sorry to say but, you may want to check out the Transmission section under 2nd gear....

Is your gear slipping or is your clutch slipping?
If it's just started slipping on the gears don't ride till you fix it. You may not even have to get any parts if you haven't worn the shift forks, just a dremmel fix will get it done.1979 XS1100SF "Sakura Natsuhiboshi"

i dont think it the clutch sliping the bike chunks and it is interment and is fine in 3rd, 4th and 5th. i can feel it in the shifter like it is poping in and out, if it s an easy fix i would like to know how to fix it lol more like a step by step i am a mechanic but not great with the trannys.

Here's a coupla threads concerning that issue.
Some people make repairs with the bike on the centerstand... some flip the bike over, and some(though I couldn't find the pic right now) lift the bike up by suspending the front end from the rafters.
Common problem with these trannys.
Not all that hard to fix... takes a little effort, that's all.

Welcome to the site. The fix isn't that difficult, just takes some time and alot of cursing (in my case anyway).Harry

You can still buy new gears from Yamaha.
With a Dremmel, you grind a bevel into the gears/slots so that under acceleration, it pulls the gears together, not push thhem apart. Yamaha fixed this problem and the new gears you buy will have this bevel... but you'll pay for it.

ok thx for all the help you guys i will keep you updated on the progress and issues i have, hopefully i can get away with the mods and the spacer swap, but i think it might need new gears it slips pretty bad. i am hoping that it just broke a ring clip and the gear is just floating around in there but will give an update once i flip the bike and investigate.

The gears won't be too bad to Dremmel. Some members have had the problem so bad, that merely putting it in 1st or second at idle would make it skip.
The gears pictured here were skipping. I have drawn arrows to the contact surfaces to show you how little they actually engage each other. (The shiny rounded leading edge) The first pic is the 5th gear showing the dogs that engage the slots in 2nd gear... the second pic is 2nd gear.
So... there will still be plenty of material for you to work with to fix the problem. You'd think that just moving the gear the width of the washer closer wouldn't help much, (When you move the washer from one side of 2nd to the other) but you can see from this pic, that the width of the washer is almost the complete original contact area... so you are in effect doubling that area just by the washer move.
While the washer swap helps prevent this from happening again, it's not going to be a fix in itself if the gear surfaces are already rounded and skipping.

P.S. Don't EVER try to keep it in gear by holding down on the shift lever... you'll bend/ruin your shift forks.Last edited by trbig; 05-17-2008, 08:48 AM.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

Is the trans in 4th gear? The gear you already have out is probably 5th since it just slides off the shaft. Make sure you're in 4th and then if you work the shaft around a bit it should drop out. Sometimes moving the back wheel can help if things are jammed up. The tech tips outline quite well how to do this. Hang in there - you'll get it.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

Hello,
XSpastor is correct... "Shift the transmission into 4th gear. (This step is critical to getting the correct alignment and free space for subsequent removal of a shift fork)" and shift fork rod.
Should look like this.....
First gear and the main gear are a bit sticky so you may have to wiggle them left and right while turning the rear wheel SLIGHTLY back and forth, it's finesse not force and it will just slide right out....
