  • Is this good advice?

Sombody sent me this advice for restarting an old engine that hasn't been run for a long while. Is this good advice or will it hurt the engine overall.

    deo

Drain old oil. Refill the crankase with straight kerosene. Spin the engine over several times without starting. Let the bike sit for 24 hours.

Drain the kerosene and replace with fresh (cheap) 30W in the crankcase and a new filter. Then do whatever's necessary to get the engine in running condition.

    Run til hot...drain this oil.

Fill the crankcase with 50/50 mixture of 30W oil and Dextron auto trans fluid. Start the engine and run for 20 minutes at 2500 rpm on the centerstand. Don't ride with this mixture under load because it's too thin and you may damage the engine.

Don't be alarmed...this thin mixture will cause some smoking. this is great for internal cleaning and freeing up the rings

Drain this mixture, replace with proper 10W40 engine oil and new filter.

    Presto..clean engine.

This procedure is pretty much what I do when starting a motor that has been sitting for a long period of time in an unfriendly environment.

I did this to a V8 that had been sitting in a barn with no plugs for 6+ years. I slapped headers, aluminum manifold, a Holley and ran the piss out of it for 2 years. I am, to this day, still amazed!

My auto shop teacher told me how to do this.

      Hi Deo,
here are my 2 cents woth.
If i am going to start an engine that has been sitting for awhile, I usually put PB Blaster down in the cyclinders and let it sit a few hours. Then i rotate the crank hand or kickstarter, and add more PB Blaster. I prefert o let them sit overnight at this point. The next day crank the engine over to blow out any excess lube, Change oil, install plugs and start. After you get it running and up to normal operating temp, use a good top engine cleaner like Wynns (avalible at shops only), seafoam, or in a pinch transmission fluid. I attach a vacuum line to the carb synch ports and slowly draw some directly into the cyclinder. Do this one cyclinder at a time until done. Keep RPM about 1500 during cleaning. Then turn the engine off and lit it sit for about 20 minutes. Take it out an run it good. This helps break up carbon in the combustion chamber, on the valves, and in the ring lands. Most auto manufacturers suggest top engine cleanings.
We done this to a friends xs750 and hot compression reading went from 110-125-115 to 140-140-140. Also when I got my 81 special there was a lot of carbon visible on the valves (with the carbs off), I done the top engine cleaning, and had the carbs off a few months and 4500 miles later, and the valves looked a lot better.
I would only recommend filling an engine with kerosene if it is siezed from sitting, or full of sludge (be ready to drop the oil pan to clean the pickup screen)

Thanks for the notes. I passed it on and think that maybe we can salvage the motor after all. Who knows.

        I'll keep you posted.
