rear wheel install

On the rear wheel re-install --how close does the dust cover over the final gears need to be to the housing? I torqued the axle nut to 110lb ft. pds., but there is still 1/8 inch gap between the cover and metal housing. (XJ 1100)

There SHOULD be a gap there...the dust cover comes off with the wheel and rotates with the tire whereas the final drive is stationary. I don't think 1/8 inch is anything to worry about...better than having it rub!

The gap should be OK. You DID torque the axle nut and THEN tighten the pinch bolt, yes??

Thank you for responding---Yes I did torque the axle nut and have not yet tightened the pinche bolt. I wanted to make sure I didn't have to remove the axle again. I rotated the splines many times trying to get the dust guard up to the metal housing but then noticed the dust guard rotated with the wheel and the metal guard didn't move. So I assumed there must be some clearence but didn't know what was acceptable. I have a shop manual but it didn't have any information about that question.
