  • Owosso, Michigan local carb repair

    a two-fold request:

I had a running post a while ago on my carbs and someone suggested a place on-line to purchase the little rubber-tipped needles for my carbs.
Though I could find no marks or visible blemishes, I am still having trouble with the number 4 needle sticking open and pouring $4.00 per gallon gas out the bottom of my airbox. So I guess I will try replacing the needle and see how that works.
Does anybody know the place to get them?

Also, if i were to want someone locally in Michigan here to fix it, does anybody know of anyone?

    Thanks in advance!!

You didn't really say... but make sure you replace the float AND the seat as a pair.

If you have your float levels set too high (Low when it is right side up) it can let the valve go down too far and almost come out of the seat's hole and get cocked a bit sideways and won't let it slide up into the seat and .. well.. seat.

      Like I said...not a motor guy...sorry :-)

When I tore the carbs apart last year it was the first set I had ever seen the inside of, so I am REALLY unfamiliar with the whole thing.

Last year when I was going through this someone hooked me up with an old thread that had some pics with it and all that. I tried to adjust the floats and all that...took everything apart and put it back together, but it made no changes to my issue, unfortunately.

And the stupid thing is that the problem started out of the blue with no apparent outside reasoning...just got on the bike one night and the problem began.

I have been getting by tapping the side of the carb a half-dozen times before I start it and again after it fires up and that seems to do the trick 95% of the time, but since I am going to be selling it, I didn't think that was a very fine selling point

When you are talking about floats and seats does that include the little needle thing that is maybe bad as well?

The float can also go to far down in the bowl and wedge. I had that problem with mine. With the bowls off you can hold the carbs right side up and see if #4 float is lower than the others. There is a tang on the side off the float to set it.

As an after thought you can pull the bowls and with the carbs upside down hook a gas tank to the carbs turn it on and you can see where the gas is leaking. On My 81 sh the needle seat has an oring that can go bad. It will allow gas to bypass the needle.

Now that whole "hook up the gas with the carbs off" process sounds a little more in-depth than I might be comfortable, but I don't know if the gas leakage is a constant thing or not anyway.
Most of the time when it "leaks", it pours...as in filling the airbox with so much gas that it bogs the engine down and doesn't allow it to run.

If it's pouring our and it quits leaking when you tap on it w/ something it's probably hanging up. Sent you a PM.

If its leaking that bad into the airbox it will also leak the other way......into the engine.

Before running the motor again better check your oil to make sure its not full of fuel!!!! The bearings in the motor don't really like a gas oil mix.
