  • MS Timing

It seems my 81 MS doesn't have any slots where you can adjust the timing. I saw that the XS's have slots in the mounting plate where the pick-up coils are. So does that mean you can't adjust the timing in a MS?? If so could I replace the base I have with one for a XS??

    Cheers

    Hey there Peter,

My apologies for not getting back to you with those power readings from the TCI, just got kinda wrapped up in my own painting project!!

Glad to hear you got it running, what was the solution, did you get a new TCI, the proper 4RO kind??

Yep, due to the cent. adv. curve built/programmed into the TCI, Yamaha didn't want us adjusting the timing, hence the immovable timing plate. I haven't looked that closely at the one on my 79SF to see whether the PUC's from the 81 would mount properly on the 79 timing plate?? I also haven't looked at the 81 plate close enough to see if I could convert/make it rotate??

You keep referring to your MNS as something different than an XS, but it's essentially the same, it's being an 81 that requires the different TCI that makes it a little more of a PITA than just a 78-80 model!

      Hey T.C

No probs about the readings....yeah I did find a 4R0 unit. It was almost impossible to find one every one had the 2H7 one, but no 4RO. I just picked up a 79 timing plate unit off of ebay. So when it comes I'm going to try it out, and see if I can make it fit so as I have lots of room for timing the beast out. I don't really like not being able to adjust the timing! This hole experience has been a challenge from the get go! Oh yeah one guy in British Columbia wanted 250.00 for the TCI but I got one from the states on ebay for 45. to my door....God Bless Ebay.! I dont' think the guy new how rare they are. Oh yeah the 2R7 was a lot heavier the 4R0.

      Cheers
      Peter.
