        Hey Rubberlips,

BEFORE you go and try this, you need to truly figure out WHY it's not charging!? Doing what you propose without proper diagnosing could lead you to a lot of headache and STILL not fix it!!

There are tech tips on here about how to check your charging system. The XJ uses a brush style ALT vs. the XS's brushless. The brushes can wear down, and are replaceable and not too expensive, can get them from Partsnmore.com!!

Also, a common weak link on our machines is the Reg/Rect, when it goes, the ALT won't work but nothing is wrong with the ALT!
In the Parts for Sale forum, the sticky shows products like GEEZER's guaranteed for life R/R unit!

Diagnose first, and THEN repair what's broke!

          common weak links

Could be something as simple as a bad/corroded connection on the reg/rectifier or...
If the XJ has the same kinda electrical plugs as the XSes
Check the connectors behind the fuse block,
one of em comes from the generator has been known to melt.

thanks for all the reply's.i replaced the brushes, the connector behind the fuse board was melted,i removed it ,and connected all the wires again.i dont know how strong the magnet is supposed to be on the rotor, but there is nothing.there is allso a new battery,as the old one would no longer take a charge.i will check out the rectifier.thanks again

              No field

If there is no magnetic effect on the cover when it's running, it's because the field isn't working. The round center winding is the field, used to make the magnetic field that the rotor uses to make AC for the charging. Check that there is power there when the key is on. It's the two wire set that goes to the alternator. Just unplug them and check for power from the bike circuit. This connector is usually behind the fuse block.

Couple notes. One the XJ's brush-type alternator puts out more current than tne XS. Part of this is eaten up with the XJ's LCD display, generally considered the reason Yamaha made this change. The LCD draws power that is not drawn on the XS. Even if the swap is possible, and it should be with the correct covers, it is a step backward. In traffic and stop and go driving, you will be running the battery down.

The other comment is that the XJ originally used a battery fluid sensor in the battery. Most aftermarket batteries do not have this sensor. The result is a red warning light in your display. There is a work-around that will make this light go out:
