  • A bit of milage

    Took a ride yesterday afternoon...OK, I was playing hooky. Stopped for fuel and decided to do a little milage test since it was a perfect day and I just finished my Spring tune up a week or two ago. I stopped for fuel and topped off the tank right up to the underside of the filler neck. I know this is too full but I figured it would lower within a few minutes of riding and I wanted to be accurate.

    Temp was 80, humidity was about 80%, sunny, no wind. A very nice day here in southern Louisiana. My SF is basically stock except for pod filters, 4-1 exhaust with ceramic coating, 145 mains, 45 pilots and cams advanced 4 degrees. I did a mix of highway, stop & go, cut some twisties, did a few straight-line blast up to around 100 and even spent some time behind a school bus letting kids off every half mile.

    When I got back I stopped at the same station to fill up again the trip clock was at 107.2 and it took 2.61 gallons to fill it back up to the underside of the filler neck.

    Thats 41 MPG. I was impressed since I was expecting something in the low 30's.

    Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

    I'm not actually looking forward to testing mine but having just got it sorted out I'm going to.

    Tkat brace, new coils/wires/plugs, refurbed carbs (thanks 81 xsproject), recon'd top end, windshield (thanks dpotter58), resprayed tank and panels, 4-1 exhaust, sweet xs pod filters, in line fuel filters, progressive springs, thick hand grips, jumped headlight relay.

      This makes me curious about mine as well. Weather looks good so hopefully I can check it out.

        I avg rt around 34 MPG on mine with full fairing and bags my 06 CBR1000RR gets LOL 33 MPG.

          Dang, to/from work on my Virago nets me ~130 miles to 1.6 gal. of fuel! Couldn't put 2.6 gal. in even if I wanted to, tank is only 2.5, lol.

            One thing I did not mention is my machine is totally naked. So I imagine that fairing, bags, etc would have some affect on mileage.

              41 MPG!!! I am sooo jealous. The best I've been able to get out of old Betsy (also nekid) is 29.5, and that was after rebuilding the carbs, the head and the master cylinders, and installing new wheel bearings all the way around. My clutch is slipping when I get on it in the big gear. Don't notice it so much in the lower gears but I'm sure it's slipping there too. Got new clutch parts on order. Anyone have an idea of what kind of mpg improvement would be realistic to expect with a new clutch?
              I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

                Averaged 38 mph the first two fill ups with my new to me 80 SG. She's been apart in the garage waiting on a new right side rear wheel bearing for a week and a half. PLUS I will have changed all fluids, re-lubed splines, etc when she hits the road next week. Hoping that a little TLC nets me another couple mpg. It'll be interesting to see if all the old driveline fluids, wheels bearing grease, etc had a negative impact on mileage since it was so old and potentially stiff. Probably not, but it'll be interesting to see.

                If this bike hadn't been geared for 55 mph speed limits, it would pull into the 40's easily at the speeds we run today.

                  Gas stops

                  I just picked up a 750 for parts im getting ready to do the conversion should take some of the load off it at hiway speeds. yeah back in the day 55 was it here its all 75MPH interstate and 65 on dirt roads.I have several old bikes and they cry at hiway speeds,but if ya cant keep up you will get run over.

                    On a recent trip I averaged 37.5 with full fairing, and loaded saddlebags and trunk.

                      on straigh open road, thats usually around what I get on my 80G. With all other bikes, I usually get in the 30's. Never lowere than 32 no matter how hard I drive

                        The "750 conversion" I've read and heard you guys talk about seems like a real good thing to do. I'm mechanically inclined enough to do it for sure. And for the times I might want to take it on the road for a trip, lower RPM will make me feel better for not thrashing the engine, even though it will probably not hurt the bike. I guess I am saying I would take it on the road or use it more regularly if it was turning another 500-600 rpm lower at 75-80 mph.

                        What's the thought about altering the bike and affecting the "original" status of the bike, i.e. as a classic. Is this bike becoming rare enough to make a difference?

                        My 80 SG is absolutely great condition, and my gut tells me there is value in keeping it original. I don't use it and won't use it as my daily rider, V Strom 1000 is the bike for that (had to get a word in on that bike, the best bike for tall riders known to mankind).

                          you will still have the orig parts and wouldt take long at all to put her back to original condition so no harm done.

                              i .. get 200 250 out of my 5 gal tank .. naked and just had its tune up.. new carb boots and what not .. i dont ride hard , and pretty countryish where i am .. .. so i think i'm doin ok ..
