  • Electrical question

Ok, I didn't "throw in the towel" on my xs. I wanted to, but I don't give up that easily. I am still having minor problems, (the carbs are working correctly, I am just in the stage of tweaking them). My problem is that I can get on my bike, take off down the road and it runs great till I get over 6k rpm. Slight popping through the exhaust during extreme decelleration (throttle all the way closed).

I can ride all day under 5500 and it runs like a champ. Above 6k, it starts crapping out, and running rough. Let off the throttle, and it picks right back up again. I am hearing alot about the pickup coils, and the ignition coils. Is there an aftermarket ignition system that I can put on my bike to eliminate any weak spark problems?

    Thanks, Grimace.

A new set of Accel or Dyna coils or even stock Harley coils will fix a weak spark problem. However you may just need to replace the wires or caps. Have you ohmed out the caps to make sure they are still 5K? If they are bad you can get new ones at most any bike shop.

Fixing broken pick-up coil wires is not too hard a job if that's what the problem is. It sounds more to me like you might be having trouble with air supply. Do you still have the original airbox, and if so, have you checked the snorkel under the seat and the filter element?

checked the snorkel under the seat and the filter element?

Found a deep socket in a snorkel once.
Hows the vent in the gas cap?

          To answer those questions,
Where can I get the accel or dyna coils?
I have pod filters and the carbs are jetted for pods and 4-1 exhaust.
Vent in the gas cap is good, just cleaned it out recently.

Oh, and I did the coil wire replacement from the ignition coils to the plugs. I used a good set of 8mm wires from autozone.

The pick up coils are located under the LEFT SIDE Crank cover on the engine. They produce the "pulse" the TCI uses to fire the HIGH VOLTAGE COILS.
For inexpensive, higher output coils, try mikesxs.com . He has a high output coil that is less than $85 with new wires and plug ends. I don't have them on yet, but I DO have them.
