  • What seats are interchangeable?

I have a 78 (Says 79 on the title) standard. I had a tailbone injury over the winter and am having trouble on long rides. I am looking for a seat with a little more comfort, but do not know what year bike seats will interchange with my 78 standard. I would love a King/queen seat with a little bit of lumbar support.

    Thanks alot

    seats

Pretty sure the 78-79 Standards are the same. Specials are different, and so are the 80-81 Standards?

      Casey,
If you do a search on "Seats", there are some threads about CUSTOM seats. Diamond is one company that can take your seat, body measurements, and then build a seat just for you. The second thing to try is what I've done, put a jell pad under the seat cover!

My friend in Maine injured his over the winter as well. I think it was while ice skating. He owns a SH and is hoping the injury doesn't end up bothering him too much.

        Good luck with yours.

I noticed someone said "Specials are different" I have a few extra seats from 79 Specials. Does anyone know if they will fit other years. Thanks Tom

            John's running a 79 seat on his 80

but the 80 and 81 Special seats both have a cut out in the back for the taillight that the 79 doesn't have (I know the 81 did... and I'm pretty certain the 80 does)... It will bolt on... just needs some modification...

              special seat?

Do you think I would be alright looking for an 80-81 special seat? You said it needs a little modification. Does the bike, or the seat need a mod to fit.

              Thanks

                Standard is as standard does...

Sorry Birch, I was referring to LVTom's post about the 79 Special seats...
I bought a seat off a member who claimed it was on his 80 Special but when I tried to put it on my 81 Special... no go... too wide and IIRC the mounting wasn't the same... but I could be wro... mistaken... on that point...
Found out it was from a Standard rather than a Special... too bad too as it was a really nice seat...

When I said modification I meant... if you put a 79 Special seat on an 80 or 81 Special... you have to figure out a new place for the tail light assembly since it goes under the back of the seat on the newer models and on the rear fender on the 79 Specials...

                Sorry for the confusion

                  seat pan

Seat pan on 78-9 Std. is different than the 79 specials. Indentation for the TCI on Std. in rear. In front for Specials.

That is what I was worried about. I will probably have to custom order some foam and covering for my standard, or i might try one of those donuts my uncle swore by. It sure is weird that my old body now requires donuts for survival.

                      custom seat

I took an old Corbin seat I had, and took it to a local guy who does upolstery. I told him to stuff it with extra foam before re-covering it. He sewed the pattern on there that I wanted and I'm very happy with it. Cost about $200 and it looks brand new. Comfortable as can be for long trips. Totally worth it.

An Air Hawk cushion strapped to the seat should sufficiently relieve your discomfort. It worked for a buddy of mine.
