  • Thanks to TheWiz and Planedick...

...for coming over to my place this weekend and helping me with my bike. Planedick brought his carb sticks and got my carbs all synched up...definately made a difference in how it runs/responds. It was also very cool just to meet those guys and see their bikes.

Now for the bad news...my bike is still having a mid throttle, rough running problem that is going to drive me insane. After the guys left, I acted on Planedick's suggestion of making sure the centrifugal advance wasn't, as he put it "drier than a popcorn ----". I pulled the advance assembly to get access to the centrifugal assembly, cleaned and lubed it, then went to put the whole thing back together. I figured that while I had it apart, I would do the PUC wire repair even though PO had already done it. The insulation on his job was cracked and brittle, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to replace them anyway, even though I could not get the bike to fail by tugging on them earlier with the engine running. Anyway...got everything soldered/heatshrinked(?) and was going to mount it back in its spot when I noticed that there are some "flat spots" in what would normally be the range of motion that the mechanism would turn when the vacuum advance is operating. I mean, it is a very noticable "click, click, click" in that range only. Would that lend to this problem that I am having with the way it runs? I would assume that this should be a smooth movement to advance/retard the timing smoothly? Please give me some advice on this one...

Mike, I think you found your problem. IF it has been run for ages dry, like many of these machines, it DID wear a "flat spot" in the advance. If it's lubed, and still "hangs" slightly at the flat spots, you may need to replace the advance mech. to fix it. As you have an '80, I would look to ebay for a replacement. I have seen them recently, and they went for just a few dollars plus shipping.
