  • 82 xj1100 transmission

Hello All. Thanks for all of the info and ongoing dedication.
My first and second gears are gone. I am wondering if transmission for the xj1100 is compatible with the transmissions of the earlier XS1100 models. If so, what years?

    Hey Darrell,

Yep, the engine innards are all cross compatible! However, before you go ordering a bunch of very expensive gears, if you'll SCROLL DOWN FROM THE MAIN FORUM PAGE, not just using the links in the left yellow column, you'll find the Tech Tips forums, check out the repair, transmission ones, several there that you may find enlightening, and can save you lots of $$$ if you are decently mechanically inclined!

If you've had your Xj from the beginning, and you KNOW that you haven't done the "hold the shift lever down" in first gear trick to keep it from skipping, then you may just need to do the grinding processes! However, if you've just gotten the bike, and don't know the history of how it was used, it could have been abused, and you may need to replace some shift forks....they are aluminum and easy worn/damaged against the hardened steel gears when someone attempts to HOLD it in gear that way!
