    Hey T
I actually got about 3 more months out of it using that method but ultimately it honked no more ! I took it apart to see if there was anything to do , as I had to do with my stock horns , but no luck . I'm watching a pair of Fiamms on ebay now .

    Cheers

      El cheapo

So this season I finally ordered a replacement horn from ebay . A Fiamm this time and it looks like a better horn . Quality control at Stebel seems lax from what I read .
Anyway - I'm back to deafening again and looking for something to honk at .
Maybe all those deer that thought they had the right of way last week and broke my buddy;s leg and his new bike . Ahh hindsight - never even thought about using the horn that day .

        Hi T.C.
that'll work but don't hooking the relay power source to the AUX fuse mean that the horn is powered up even when the key is off?
I hooked my Stebel-Nautilus' relay to the power feed back from the ignition switch so it only works with the key on and it's protected by the 30Amp main fuse. I noticed that the deluxe relay kit includes a 30 Amp fuse while the stock AUX fuse is only a 10.

These numbers are standard to all relays of this type. The way I wired mine is like the method TC described. From the AUX terminal (terminal assy is what it is called in the Clymer manual) run a 12 gauge wire to the #87 terminal, and then continue the wire from terminal #30 to the horns. That will complete the controlled circuit of the relay. Now, using the brown wire that was going to the horns, route it up to your relay, and attach it to the #85 terminal, and using the pink wire that feeds the horn button, attach that wire to the #86 terminal. That will complete the controlling circuit of the relay. Now when you depress the horn button, you will complete the ground, and energize the relay. That will close the contacts in the relay, and send power to the horns. Also the horn wiring does not go through the headlight bucket, it runs with the turn signal wiring under the tank, and there is are two connectors near the front of the tank. One of the connectors carries the power to the switches, and the other carries power to the components from the switches.

OMFG thank you for this! This is totally not how I hooked things up by going off of my own understanding, and the diagram on the relay. I ended up blowing the 20 amp fuse for the accessory lights, d'oh!

My 2nd trip the hardware store later, I googled "XS11 horn relay install" or something and found this thread, and your excellent instructions (man, I hope this forum survives as long as I have my XS11!).

Years ago I installed a couple of aftremarket horns just to the original circuit... then realized when I was done that it wouldn't do. If I revved the motor, I could get a pathetic little toot. So I'd have to rev the motor to honk. =)

Now holy crap, the thing is SCARY LOUD. Whoo!

This group convinced me to install a relay to control the power to my ebay loud horns on my XJ1100. These things are deafening in my garage. I am very happy with the results. I am very grateful for the help and advice given on this forum.

I have had 4 motorcycles with Stebel nautilus 139db horns...none have ever failed...but it is imperitive that the horn has a dedicated wiring harness and relay...If you just use the existing horn wires...you'll fry them or something else... as their current draw from the horn will overstress them..Also it is important that the horn is mounted vertically or it will fail early. There is an impeller inside the horn and it must remain in a vertical position...Swampthing has just reccieved a Stebel Nautilus and a plug and play wiring harness with built in relay.....so i expect my experiences with this horn to continue to be positive...we'll see...
heres the plug and play harness...but you could make one if you gots the skills...

Hope your luck continues Ben. My Stebel was good for quite a while, but finally conked out. (properly mounted). Likely won't be gettin' another.
                Recently replaced with the Fiamms.
