  • Bypassing starter button?

On my continuing efforts to get my xs1100h running, I am really thinking it is the starter button, but want to be sure. Since the plug from the starter on my SG is different, I can't just swap out a known good one, and want to try and bypass the button and kill switch all together.

I did some searching and didn't find anything, and it is no good showing a wiring diagram since I can't make heads or tails of one.

I know (kinda) that the killswitch interrupts the ground, so if I connect those to wires at the plug on the harness it should be the same thing (right?). The blue wire then needs something, is it just being jumped to a 12v power source? I figure I better ask before trying this.

Before anyone points it out, I have replaced the solenoid with a known good unit (off the SG), and it did not help. Volt testing at the starter button did not register anything.

    Thanks

    by-passing starter button

Find the blu/wht wire on the solenoid (soldered on). This is the wire that goes to the starter button. If you take a jumper wire and touch that blu/wht solder joint to ground, the bike should crank (key on, kill switch in on position).

Is that how to bypass the starter button? I want to include enough of the wiring to rule out only the starter button.

And actually having the bike start would be good too.

        by-pass

Well, then find the blu/wht wire at the starter button and ground that. If grounding that wire doens't crank the bike but by doing as I mentioned earlier does, then that blu/wht wire is NFG!

You may want to check and see if the ground wire for the switch housing actually makes a good ground. It will be the black wire that is screwed to the switch housing. The switch housing is not case grounded. If you ground the bl/w wire, it should crank. If you ground it at the solenoid, and it cranks, then run a ground wire from one of the screws that holds the switch housing together to a known good ground (like the battery). Try the starter button again. If it does crank, then check the connection for the switch under the tank. The switches do not have a connection in the headlight bucket.
