  • Tci ??

    Hello,

Is there a check to know whether the unit is either 4RO or 2??

I need the 4R0-82305-10-00 part number so if anyone has one it's mine...:-)

    Tks
    Peter.

    Check out Randy's unit...

page! He's one of our resident Guru's, and an electrical wunderkind. Here's the link to his page that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about TCI's

    Good luck with it!

Check number on unit, if 4RO on it...it might be a 4RO unit other wise might have something like 2H7 on it.

You know like using a ohm metre or volt metre if there are any subtle differences in readings.

            BTW...

Should yours be missing or FUBARED,
can change timing parts/pick-up coils to 80 or before and use a 2H7 TCI.

Was going to point you to Randy's web site but can't fing the link
, he's the resident TCI guru.

So you hsve no spark ?

Look in the recent postings in this forum from Randy called "Randy's page is back up" and follow his directions to access his page. It's worth a look...

Okay well the unit I had is 2H7 which I broke the board trying to take it apart. I need the 4R0-82305-10-00 number. Well anyways the white/red wire still only had 0 volts which it should of had 12 volts, maybe if that unit was on the right machine the readings would be different...don't know. But on my machine it looked to be beat. Which would again explain why ony 2 cyls were firing.

                    Okay Peter,

Now, Peter, if your 81 had a 2H7 TCI in it, then for one thing, the red/white wire...at least one of them would NOT have any power going to it UNTIL the engine was running. The 2H7 unit diverts the full 12 volts to the Ignition coils during startup, but then sends it thru a different set of connectors that run THRU the ballast resistor to the coils so that they don't get burned up! SO...this may be why you were getting 0 volts readings!?!?

Secondly, you'll need to investigate under your left timing cover to see if a PO didn't swap out the 81's Vac. Adv. ONLY unit and timing plate for an earlier one that has BOTH the Cent. Adv. weights/parts as well as the Vac. Adv. parts?

IF you still have the OEM 81 Vac. Adv. ONLY and timing plate, then YES, you need to find a 4RO TCI to install. BUT, if yours has the Cent. and Vac. Adv. parts, then it was converted to be able to use the 2H7 unit, and you can find them easier and cheaper!

                      Hello T.C
That 2H7 came from a different bike; I never had the original unit. When I read the shop manual for the bike it shows no ballast resistor and it explains exactly how to check the TCI unit and if doesn't meet the readings they say then need to replace the unit. So again I have nothing to compare my reading to. Maybe you could check yours to see how yours reads. Here are the parameters gray to ground-12 volts, White/Red to ground-12 volts, Black/white to ground 6 volts, Orange to ground-12 volts, Red/white to ground-12 volts. But first you need to turn the ignition switch to the ON position. I do only have the vacuum advance no cent advance.

                      Tks
                      Peter.
