Engine Compatability

Before I get flamed, I did seveal searches and only found the one thread relating to putting a '79 engine into an '81. Does anyone know the compatability of all (XS/XJ) engines? Will any Yamaha 1100 4 cylinder engine with a shaft drive fit into any of these frames? Issues like timing/advance/etc. can be relatively ignored for this thread. More just worried about mount/shaft alignment. Thanks!

All 1100 engines are cast the same. You can put a '78 into an 82 with no problems. I WOULD put your later model alt on the early engine, as I think they may have a different plug on the connector.
