  • Question about 1100 to 750 rear end swap

    Hi,
    Is there a difference between the rear end differental used in the '79 special and the '79 standard? I have an '80 standard and plan to make the swap to the 750. There are several '79s posted on cheapbay and would like to know before purchasing.

    All of the rear ends are the same. This is for the XS1100, they will ALL interchange with NO mods needed. The 750/850 rear ends have a few VERY MINOR differences. You can use the rear end off of any year 750/850, but the '79 and later will be slightly easier to convert. They are ALL geared the same, so you do get the higher ratio with any 750/850 final drive.

      That clears it up for me. I saw two on ebay and it must have been the shadows because the looked a little different. The cone where the axle comes out looked a little longer on the special one.

          Is that 1 J 7 Y O? The letters blend on my screen and cannot make out the second character. And that would be stamped on the actual gear? Can it be seen without opening the housing?

                    Question about the Driveshaft

                    Hi Guys,
                    One more question (for the moment) about the swap. Does the 750 shaft drop in for this mod? Instead of modding the 1100 shaft can I just substitute the 750 shaft or are the splines different? I think I can get it 750 shaft real cheap.

                      no, no, no. unless you want to spend ALOT of dough modifying the 750 shaft, You should follow the steps outlined in the tech tips using the stock xs11 shaft, the splines are also beefier for the 11.

                          Just bought the rear end. Coming from MI. Bike had 9K mi on the odo, supplier took pic. Wish me luck!!

                            Should NOT take much luck with only 9K on it! Don't forget the change ALL the fluids in the bike! I do use the Redline 75-90?(not positive on the viscosity range) in my middle and final drives. I have well over 20K on my conversion, and I DO twist the throttle HARD a lot!

                              Thanks Ray.
                              Clymer says to use Hypoid SAE90 weight for both the middle and rear drives. Sound like what I use for the lower units on the boat.
                              Will the oil from the middle drive leak out when I pull the driveshaft?
                              I also intend to grease the splines heavily at re-assembly and probably install new rear tire as well. Mine is reaching prophylactic stage!!!
                              I may ask Bikerphil to join me for a case of cold ones. He's done it on his bike and doesn't like very far.
                              Good to hear about it holding up because I like to twist the throttle hard myself.... every chance I get, however brief that may be. I don't waste any opportunity.
                              Typical highway speed = 80mph +
