  • MAC pipes rusting after 4 months

I bought a set of the 4 into2 Mac pipes at Christmas and the headpipes (downtubes for you Brits) are rusting already. I live in Southern California, I have n't ridden it in the rain (it has n't rained). I do live near the ocean, but the bike is kept in a shed. This seems like really poor quality. I had Mac 4 into 1 pipes previously that went rusty over time, but I'm sure that was over a period of years not months. Has anyone else had the same experience? Is there anything you can put on the head pipes to stop that happening?

Did they come with any sort of warranty?

Sounds like you got a crook set to me. See if you can return them. Pipes on our bikes usually rust from the inside out because of condensation. If you score a new set (good luck), spray the inside with heatproof ceramic paint and cure them as per the instructions, but do it before you fit them or run the bike with them, this will give you years of life over their normal expectancy.

I did spray the insides with 1,500 degree paint, (that was in an attempt to stop them going blue). The pipes on the outer edge look good, no rust, not blue, the two in the middle are getting pitted and are blue.

The pipes are n't rusted through, it is the onset of surface rust. The chrome plating is just really thin on the head pipes. I wonder if I could get them rechromed now before they get more rusty/ugly?

                  Hey Moto,

Getting pipes rechromed is a PITA and $$$$. You might want to look at the JET HOT COAT process. They have a nice silver that is close to chrome, that way you can at least possibly preserve your investment with their coatings, vs. having them get all rusted, pitted and such! Won't be quite as shiny as chrome, but would last a lot longer!

It's the air off the ocean ... My extended family is in Newfoundland and EVERYTHING out there rusts away rather quickly. All the cars ,vans bikes, etc just rot away so much more quickly.
