I recently plasti-dipped (spray-on) my carb boots and was very pleased with the results. Thought I would post some pics for all to see. One note on Plasti-Dip, it takes about 10 coats for badly cracked boots (which mine were). I put 8 coats on with 30 minutes between coats. Got tired, went to bed, and the next morning put 2 more coats on. The first 8 left a real smooth finish - similar to factory finish. The second 2 kind of bubbled when I put it on - I think due to the fact that the other coats were so far along in the curing process. They came out with kind of a rough finish, which still looks a lot better than they were. If you're going to plasti-dip I recommend doing all the coats on the same day with 30 minutes between coats. Sorry for the quality of the pics, but I took 'em with a $10 camera.

Hey DB,
That's good to know....that it takes so many coats!
I tried the spray on stuff, but after just a couple of coats, I didn't think it was really doing anything, so I quit!!!! I'm thinking of doing the heatshrink stuff since it comes in GREEN! Otherwise, I might go back and try putting on another 8 coats!

Plasti-Dip is actually pretty cool. You don't have to worry about runs or anything like that. It will flow down over the boot and evens out real nice. That's probably why it took so many coats - it's pretty thin stuff.
I took a piece of 4" masking tape and masked the openings - just flat across them without trimming the excess, and wrapped a little piece around the vacuum tube. It worked good with the masking tape as the 'flow' wound up on the tape. Gives you a pretty good idea of how thick a coating you are building up. When I was done I just took a pair of scissors and cut around the openings on the outside, poked a hole in the middle and it peeled it off easy. To paint I just put on disposable plastic gloves and held it by the vacuum tube and sprayed 'em.
So far it's handling the heat (supposed to be good to 200 degrees), and the wd-40 I sprayed on them to get the carbs on didn't hurt 'em either.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

JJ - Got it at Ace Hardware. They had it where they keep the spray paint. Didn't see green, but they had yellow. TC - wouldn't that be a clashI think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Boots are black. That's the way they grow!!
Thanks, I'll look at Ace. Tried Permatex black high temp, but it is slightly silver or grey, so no match for what I want.
ThanksJohn

Green?????
I have red, yellow, blue, clear and black at home. It's possible they might come in green but haven't seen it yet.
I wonder if you can mix the dip, i.e. yellow and blue?
Would probably give you more of upheavel shade of green though.Ernie

I tried the high tack gasket sealer on the boots. Cam out looking pretty good, but never lost it's tack, which I think that would look pretty bad after a couple of miles. Oh, and it did not work, even with several coats. My boots are not very bad at all but I'm still getting leaks. So looking around the shop I found the stuff that you apply to tools, for a rubber grip. It is pretty thick so I thought about thining it with alcohol, for a lighter coat.Flatlander

audio_mekanik Green bike with Yellow carb boots, would look like a John Deere bike
Flat - try the spray-on plasti-dip. It works great with minimal mess, and one can is just about right for four boots. Might want to clean the gasket sealer off first - not sure what that will do to the finished product. I took mine and cleaned them with acetone to get all the oil off, and then ruffed them up good with 220 grit sandpaper.Last edited by dbeardslee; 04-30-2008, 05:58 AM.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I plasti-dipped my carb boots with black, and also had a leaking petrol tank coming from the mounting bracket every time i bolted it down to the frame, must've been hairline crack, so i gave it a whole spraycan full of green plasti-dip, did the trick.
