Hey all,
Had some great help from the forum on a couple things on my new to me 80 XS SG Special.
One thing I did not anticipate enough was the lack of certain parts (left side rear wheel bearings, and seal for that bearing) for these bikes. I have done searches and gone through many threads looking for ideas and alternate parts for these bikes.
Is there a guru out there that has stocked up on parts like this as things became scarce but before they were discontinued?
I pulled the rear end to get a look at the bearings and service things. I popped out the right side bearing, dinging it in the process and luckily I had the sense to leave the left side the heck alone. So, I have a right bearing and seal coming from BikeBandit (local bearing shop wanted $25 for this bearing and had no seal so forget that...) What I did notice was some heat signs on the outer rim of the bearing, brown discoloration of the metal. So I would have wanted to replace it anyway, unless the heat signs are not a problem.
I cleaned off the left side bearing and re packed it so-to-speak by mashing in new grease with the bearing still in the wheel, no way I'm going to take it out unless I have a replacement.
SO, anyone out there have a bearing to spare as well as a seal they'd be able to part with for the proper fee?
The bearing shows no signs of any problems, so I'm not losing any sleep over leaving it in, just like to have one on hand if I ever have a problem.
