  • needle jet - ugh

Ok, well I f'd one of my needle jets (266 X2) trying to get it out the "clymer" way. Really should add to the carb tips not to pull em out with a pair of pliers. Anyways anyone know where to get new ones?

I've searched and it seems that maybe no one has them, anyone found a source yet?
Mikes xs has ones that may or may not work, anyone using the replacements from Mikes xs? Did you replace needles too? What number goes with the Y0?
    Thanks

From the bottom, I use a large punch that is still small enough to not hit the alignment post in the side of the tube and pound them out after having sprayed carb cleaner then penetrating oil. I have never damaged one with this method.

Yeah, I got the broken one out with a punch and that is how I'll remove the rest, but I still need to replace at least the one that I screwed up, and probably should do them all so they match.

          Hey Psycho,

You're in luck. A quick search for mikesxs emulsion revealed
THIS THREAD BY KNEWSOM who experienced the same problem and ordered MikesXS jet needles/emulsion tubes, and they worked very well!!!

Someone posted, and was in the above thread about Motorcyclecarbs.com, but they may or may not have it??

A few more Q's while I'm at it...

Thanks TC, I went looking and found that thread, do you know if he used the matching Mikesxs needles for those tubes?

Does anyone know of a way to get the pilot jets out if a PO rounded them out so a screw driver won't turn em?

Never mind, easyout and heat for the broken pilot jets, search is great!

If you have a drill press, skip the easy out and use Fredintoon's method.

Here's what I have done. Grind up a screwdriver you are not fond of to be an EXACT fit in the jet's slot then cut the handle off. Fit the ground-up blade in your drill press. Put the carb body onto the drill base and force the blade down into the jet's screwdriver slot with the drill feed arm. Turn the chuck backwards BY HAND to loosen the jet.
I don't have a drill press, also I don't think there is any slot, even just gently turning the screw driver I can't feel even the slightest resistance. Not saying it wouldn't work, if I had access to a drill press I'd try it but I don't.

my advice is if you don't need to change jets, leave them be. Once you start drilling and using easyouts theres not going back. Just keep spraying carb cleaner from the the air jet side and the bowl side trying to keep it soaking and blow them out with compressed air.

If you use a #1 left twist easy out there is NO drilling required. It fits the pilot like it was made for it and does NOT ruin the pilot. The only heat required is IF the gas has turned to black tar. Just enough heat to soften the tar. Stick the carbs in a bucket of hot/warm 120-140 deg. water is enough.

There's jets and then there's jets

                          Hi psyco,
everyone NEEDS a drill press. Even the el-cheapo one at the half-price sale for $50 or less will do.
That said, the ancient trick I passed on to the list works for those little jets that screw in and have a screwdriver slot to turn them. The needle jet is that great horkin' brass thing the diaphragm needle works in, right? As I remember, it just presses out. A drill press will do that for you too.

and still more questions about carbs

I know I need a drill press but SWMBO seems to think that it wouldn't go well with our kitchen decor and well, thats about the only place I'd have to set it up and use it.

I've got problems with just about all the jets in my carbs. It seems like the PO(s) had one screw driver that didn't fit any of the screws or jets so they rounded em all out for me. Then I went ahead and broke the first needle jet trying to get it out like the clymer manual shows with pliers. After that I figured a punch works way better.

I cleaned all the stuck jets as best I can but I was thinking about ordering a rebuild kit and then I'd like to take all the little buggers out and replace em.

I guess I'll see how it runs first and then decide. The bike ran ok before, but really rich at lower speeds (around town) and lean at higher speeds (on the free way). And it does have the stock jets. If the cleaning takes care of the rich condition I'll probably skip the rebuild kit and just get a larger main jet to richen up the top end for the aftermarket exhaust. If the cleaning doesn't fix the rich then I'll get the whole kit and see if that helps. I'm looking at the georgefix ones on ebay - they seem to be a good quality and complete, wish they had needle jets though!

Also, I don't seem to have the washer on my idle screws, or its stuck down inside the carb body and I can't get it out. This could be causing my rich condition right? Anyone know if I can pick up some washers at the hardware store that will work? It seems the 78 and 79 didn't have o-rings just washers, but how big are they?

                            and a less serious question....
Anyone know how they build carbs so that no matter what hole you spray carb cleaner in it always comes out the hole pointed directly at your eyes? I mean it must take an engineering genius to figure out that kind of stuff.

Buy the kits from Georgefix. I use them, and am happy! They DO come with EVERYTHING you need except the "emulsion tube". Those and different jets can be had from MikesXS at reasonable prices. His jets are per pair, as they are for the 650. I just ordered two pair of each on the mains, so I can rejet some carbs for Blackmage. It DOES include the idle jets, and they DO NOT have a washer on the bottom for the '79.
