XJ 1100 engine guards - 1" or 1 1/4"

Hey guys,

My XJ has nice engine guards on it and I'm thinking about some highway pegs.

Most I see listed are for 1 1/4" guards.

I'm thinking the XJ guards are 1"?

That's what it looks like to me and I don't have a diameter measuring tool ...

Just measured mine. 1"

A couple of fender washers will take up the slack. That's how mine were put on. Seemed to work well.

I was thinking some neoprene, but a fender washer sounds more permanent...

You can take a piece of string, tape, whatver, and wrap it around the guards, mark the circumference, and then lay it out on a ruler, should be about 3.14" long IF it's 1" diameter tubes, will be closer to 4" if 1& 1/4" diameter bar!

I was holding a ruler behind the pipe and eye-balling sight-line edges.

I knew it had to be either 1" or 1 1/4" and it looked like 1" right on. I could see the inch marks either side.

I also thought about holding cardboard behind the pipe and using a scribe to scratch both sides of the pipe, but leaning slightly in or out magnifies at the end point. So I settled for sight line.

I like your explanation way better than this one I found on eBay:

Helpful Hint: If you are unsure of the diameter of the tubing on which you'd like to install the highway pegs and don't have a dial at your disposal, here is an easy way to figure it out. You'll need a piece of heavy paper or cardboard, a ruler, a pencil, and a scissors. Use the pencil and ruler to make to marks on the edge of the paper 1" apart. Take the scissors and cut lines perpendicular to the edge of the paper at the marks you just made. Fold the resulting flap of paper out of the way. Next, take the piece of paper to the bike and check to see if the tubing will slip into the opening you've made in the edge of the paper. If the opening is too small, repeat the procedure enlarging the opening to 1-1/8", 1-1/4", 1.35", and 1-1/2" until you find one that will fit.
