  • Swapping out triple tree plate, any tips?

On my SG, the triple tree plate that says "Yamaha" and mounts just below the headlight on the forks.....the SG is so rusted yet my SH one looks great.

I ordered a Midnight Special one just to have one that wasn't rusted, then had it painted to match my tank and battery covers.

Anyway.....before I dive into pulling everything off from above it, does anyone have any tips from experience of ways to avoid getting myself into a much more level of difficulty or is it simple enough yet time consuming?

I'm also replacing the mounting brackets for the headlamp and replacing the headlamp bucket so it's not like I don't have to remove that stuff already.

Not being much of a mechanic, I was proud of myself with the simple mounting of the on/off, starter button assembly......until.... when I went to connect the four wires (2 red, 1 blue, 1 black) of course the connection boxes didn't match up. I ended up cutting the wires and connecting them with four double ended crimps. That allowed me to keep the original plastic connection box located below the fuel tank.

It's not hard to replace that cover. You must first remove the headlight to access the wiring and to unbolt the turn signals. After the T/S are removed just let the bucket hang on the harness. Unplug all the connections for the gauges inside the head light bucket so the upper tree can be lifted off, and held out of the way. With the upper tree out of the way, you can slide the fork ears up and off, and then the cover will slide up and off. Mind the rubber bushing, and the trim ring that sit below the ears. Slide the new one on, and reassemble.

Well, I got it done today and it wasn't too bad. Actually, I had to do it to both bikes since I wanted the chrome one that was still nice off my SH and put in on my SG. I put the painted one (maroon) on the SH.

My tanks and batteries covers I got back are maroon for one bike and candy red for the other. I'm going with the red on my SG even though it is the tank and battery covers off the SH.

Again, thanks for the help.....Oh, and yes, I did swear some.
